TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE CITY OF SWEETWATER TO CO-DESIGNATE WEST FLAGLER STREET FROM 107TH AVENUE TO 117TH AVENUE AS COLONEL ENRIQUE BERMUDEZ VARELA STREET; APPROVING SUCH CO-DESIGNATION

BODY

WHEREAS, Enrique Bermudez Varela was born in Leon, Nicaragua, on December 11, 1932; and
WHEREAS, Bermudez Varela graduated from the Military Academy of Nicaragua as a Civil and Military Engineer, also attending courses in the United States at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and at the Inter-American Defense College, Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Enrique Bermudez Varela served as a member of the Inter-American Peace Force in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Bermudez Varela served as a Defense Attach� at the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, D.C. and as a delegate of his native country in the Organization of American States (OAS); and
WHEREAS, Enrique Bermudez Varela married Elsa Mejia in 1966, and they had three children: Enrique, Angela and Elsa; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Enrique Bermudez Varela was the Commander in Chief of the Army fighting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and after the peace was attained and free elections took place, he returned from Miami to his native country to help rebuild a devastated nation; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Bermudez Varela was assassinated on February 16, 1991 in his native country and laid to rest in Miami, Florida, where his family lives; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 12,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the City of Sweetwater to co-designate W. Flagler Street from 107th Avenue to 117th Avenue as �Colonel Enrique Bermudez Varela Street�.
Section 2. Approves the co-designation of W. Flagler Street from 107th Avenue to 117th Avenue as �Colonel Enrique Bermudez Varela Street�.
Section 3. The Clerk of the Board is directed to send certified copies of this Resolution to the City of Sweetwater Manager, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
