REPORT: | First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Chairman Moss opened the public hearing and called for persons wishing to appear before the Commission in connection with this proposed resolution. After hearing no one, he closed the public hearing. There being no questions or comments, the Commission proceeded to vote. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION CO-DESIGNATING SW 6TH STREET FROM SW 127TH AVENUE TO SW 128TH AVENUE AS �FATHER JUAN MANUEL DORTA DUQUE STREET� BODY WHEREAS, Father Juan Manuel Dorta Duque was born in Havana, Cuba, on September�23, 1922; and WHEREAS, Father Dorta Duque graduated from Belen School in Havana and studied to be a priest with the Society of Jesus, becoming a priest in 1941, and continuing his studies in Italy and England; and WHEREAS, Father Dorta Duque returned to Cuba becoming a teacher, first at Colegio Dolores in Santiago de Cuba and later in Belen School in Havana; and WHEREAS, in 1961, Father Dorta Duque was expelled from Cuba along with many priests and nuns and was sent to Quito, Ecuador as a professor at the Jesuit University, later being put in charge of the Jesuit order in that city; and WHEREAS, in 1967, Father Dorta Duque moved to Miami, and since then has been instrumental not only in building one of the largest alumni associations in this country but also as a force behind bringing resources to build Belen Jesuit Preparatory School; and WHEREAS, Father Dorta Duque still presides over baptisms, weddings and funerals, still visits and consoles the sick, and assists the community in whatever task is required from him; and WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor Father Juan Manuel Dorta Duque with this co-designation; and WHEREAS, SW 6th Street is a County road located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, this proposed co-designation is located in County Commission District 12, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, finds that Father Juan Manuel Dorta Duque Street has made a direct, significant lifetime contribution to this community. Section 2. By a three-fifths vote of the Board members present, co-designates SW 6th Street from SW 127th Avenue to SW 128th Avenue as �Father Juan Manuel Dorta Duque Street�. Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. |
