REPORT: | First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Chairman Moss opened the public hearing for persons wishing to speak on this proposed resolution. He closed the public hearing after no one appeared wishing to speak. Commissioner Gimenez spoke in support of this proposed resolution, noting the young man named was killed in Afghanistan while defending the USA. Hearing no further comments or questions, the Board proceeded to vote on the foregoing proposed resolution as presented. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION CO-DESIGNATING SW 48TH STREET FROM SW 58TH AVENUE TO SW 69TH AVENUE AS �SPC SERGIO SAGONI ABAD STREET�; URGING THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI TO JOIN IN SUCH CO-DESIGNATION BODY WHEREAS, Abad faced struggles as a child as his parents fought drug addiction; and WHEREAS, despite often living on the streets, Abad never failed to attend school, and during summer school in 7th grade, he met Krystine Pitts, and through her he acquired the family he never had; and WHEREAS, in Krystine�s mother, Lori, Abad found the unconditional love of a mother, and a father in Krystine�s father, Paul, a police sergeant from the Coral Gables Police Department; and WHEREAS, when Abad began attending South Miami Senior High, he enrolled in the JROTC, a place where he met his mentor, CSM Oliver Hoggard, and during this period he distinguished himself in various competitions, winning a number of awards; and WHEREAS, after obtaining his GED, Abad went directly to an army recruitment office, and eventually trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he excelled, scoring at the top of his company in many areas, and later being assigned to Camp Elder, Vicenza, Italy; and WHEREAS, in 2007, Abad was deployed to the Korengal OutPost in Afghanistan, keeping in touch with the Pitts family on a weekly basis; and WHEREAS, by 2008 Abad was looking forward to returning from his tour of duty, but just a week before his return to the U.S., Abad was killed in a battle at the base in Wanat, near the border with Pakistan; and WHEREAS, Abad was laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery; and WHEREAS, among the many awards he received were the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal and the NATO Medal; and WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Abad by co-designating SW�48th Street from SW 58th Avenue to SW 69th Avenue as �SPC Sergio Sagoni Abad Street�; and WHEREAS, this proposed co-designation is a county road located in County Commission District 7, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Having conducted a public hearing, co-designates SW 48th Street from SW 58th Avenue to SW 69th Avenue as �SPC Sergio Sagoni Abad Street�. Section 2. Urges the City of South Miami to join Miami-Dade County in this codesignation. Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this resolution to the Mayor, Commissioners and City Manager of the City of South Miami, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department, and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. |
