REPORT: | County Attorney Robert Cuevas read the foregoing resolution into the record. Hearing no questions or comments, the County Commission proceeded to vote on the foregoing resolution. Commissioner Sorenson read the body of the resolution into the record. A family representative of the late Ms. Debbie Curtin expressed appreciation to the Mayor, the County Commission, the County Manager, and County employees for their support of Ms. Curtin’s work over the years, and for acknowledging Ms. Curtin through this resolution. County Manager George Burgess presented the late Ms. Curtin’s family with a newly designed sign displaying “Debbie Curtin Park” as the new name of Palm Glades Park. | ||||||

REPORT: | Assistant County Attorney Ferrer read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Chairman Souto opened the public hearing, after no one came forward in connection with this resolution, the public hearing was closed. Commissioner Sorenson noted this park was within District 8, and she stated that little funding was available for the park, however this park would have a name and may attract sponsors. She expressed appreciation to her colleagues for supporting this resolution. Commissioner Heyman asked to be listed as a co-sponsor. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION APPROVING THE NAMING OF PALM GLADES PARK LOCATED AT 22820 SW 112 AVENUE AS �DEBBIE CURTIN PARK� BODY WHEREAS, Deborah Jay Curtin, originally from Buffalo, New York, made significant contributions to Miami-Dade County through her exemplary actions, courageous spirit, joyous and vibrant personality; and WHEREAS, Ms. Curtin joined the County in 1975 originally as a clerk/stenographer and then went on to assume multiple positions of responsibility including leading our Employee Suggestion Program, the special taxing division of our Public Works Department and ultimately as the first Director of Team Metro; and WHEREAS, as the founding Director of Team Metro, Ms. Curtin led an outreach effort for our County that eventually provided eight offices with direct services, enhanced the quality of community life through code enforcement and helped citizens navigate County procedures, and she furthered this mission by establishing the Citizens Academy, a program through which County departments and our services were brought closer to the people we serve; and WHEREAS, Ms. Curtin retired from County service in 2001 and dedicated herself to a courageous and personal battle with cancer; and WHEREAS, despite her own medical and painful struggle, Debbie Curtin�s determination and dedication to the prevention of cancer led her to be involved with the American Cancer Society (ACS), receiving ACS�s Distinguished Service Award posthumously in 2008; chaired the ACS�s Miami-Dade Unit, organized its Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraisers, and lobbied both the Florida legislature and the U.S. Congress on behalf of ACS; and WHEREAS, Debbie Curtin, our warrior, passed away on August 11, 2008, after a 12-year battle with cancer; and WHEREAS, the 2008 Making Strides walk in downtown Miami was dedicated to her memory by so many of us who love her, miss her and respect her contributions; and WHEREAS, this Board desires to honor her legacy by renaming Palm Glades Park as �Debbie Curtin Park�, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Approves the renaming of Palm Glades Park located at 22820 SW 112th Avenue as �Debbie Curtin Park�, after a public hearing. Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Park and Recreation Department, General Services Administration, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Katy Sorenson. |
