REPORT: County Attorney Robert Cuevas read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Commissioner Sosa acknowledged Ambassador Armando Valladares; Salvador Gandara; Joy Mortori; Alfredo Mesa; Representatives from CABA; from the Masones; Mr. Izquierdo, Miami Medical Team; the family of Mario de la Pena; Carlos Costa; Pablo Morales; and Armando Alejandro. Commissioner Sosa noted the International Cuban Exile Day (February 24th) signified the United States opening its arms to Cuban exiles looking for the right of freedom and liberty. She noted the day united Cuba’s first independence with the memory of the four Brothers to the Rescue members from our community who were killed by the Cuban regime. Commissioner Sosa said this resolution was requested by the Cuban Patriotic Council and was supported by exile associations. She acknowledged Commissioner Souto for his co-sponsorship of this resolution. All Commission members requested to be added as co-sponsors of this proposed resolution. Commissioner Sosa further acknowledged her fellow Commissioners for their support and co-sponsorship of this resolution. Commissioner Souto noted the significant contributions of Cuban exiles in America and the permanent mark they have made throughout the world. Hearing no further questions or comments, the County Commission proceeded to vote on the foregoing proposed resolution.

TITLE
RESOLUTION DECLARING FEBRUARY 24, 2010 AND EACH FEBRUARY 24 THEREAFTER AS INTERNATIONAL CUBAN EXILE DAY IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

BODY
WHEREAS, many Cuban exiles have made Miami-Dade County their home; and
WHEREAS, the Cuban Patriotic Council (Junta Patri�tica Cubana) is made up of more than a dozen leaders from organizations that represent the Cuban exile community in Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, on January 18, 2010, the Cuban Patriotic Council came together to urge the leaders of Miami-Dade County to declare the 24th of February as International Cuban Exile Day (el 24 de Febrero, Dia Del Exilio Cubano); and
WHEREAS, in addition to the Cuban Patriotic Council, numerous exile assistance and fraternal Cuban organizations in South Florida also have expressed support for such a declaration on February 24,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Declares February 24, 2010 and each February 24 thereafter as International Cuban Exile Day in Miami-Dade County.
Section 2. Directs the Mayor or Designee to [[effectuate the intent of this resolution by]]1 develop[[ing]] appropriate programs and activities to observe International Cuban Exile Day in Miami-Dade County>> and respectfully requests that the Mayor or Designee work with the prime sponsor of this item in doing so<<.
