REPORT: | First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams advised that Commissioner Sosa asked to be listed as a co-sponsor of this item. Chairman Moss and Commissioners Jordan, Edmonson, Rolle, Diaz, Souto and Gimenez asked to also be listed as co-sponsors of this item. Commissioner Souto suggested that elected County officials or members of the County Administration meet with consulates from Medellin, Columbia, and other countries that had proven successful in using classical art and music programs to reduce violence, and discuss the possibility of developing a similar program in this community. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF APRIL 19-23, 2010 AS �STOP THE VIOLENCE WEEK� BODY WHEREAS, on Thursday, March 25, 2010, Florida International University running back Kendall Berry was stabbed and killed after a fight with another student; and WHERAS, this brutal killing is unfortunately just one of many such recent incidents of senseless violence which only serve to harm South Florida�s youth and deprive our community of their endless potential; and WHEREAS, Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County, a program of Citizens� Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County, Inc., joined forces with Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 1979 to educate young people in crime prevention, public safety, and school and community pride; and WHEREAS, Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County sponsors an annual Stop the Violence Blue Ribbon Week campaign during the week of April 20; and WHEREAS, it is necessary to raise public awareness about violence in our community; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County should declare April 19-23, 2010 as �Stop the Violence Week�, as a period for County residents to actively show their opposition to violence, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board hereby proclaim April 19-23, 2010 as �Stop the Violence Week� in Miami-Dade County, and is calling upon each citizen to help promote verbal discourse and non-violence as alternative means of resolving disagreements. |
