TITLE RESOLUTION APPROVING THE MIAMI-DADE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO GIVE OFFICER JOSEPH DERRINGER HIS SNIPER RIFLE IN RECOGNITION OF HIS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE BODY WHEREAS, Officer Joseph (JD) Derringer has been a Police Officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department since April 4, 1982 and was assigned to the Special Response Team (SRT) on April 16, 1985, where he has served as a Police Sniper, with valor and honor. Officer Joseph Derringer is a well respected member of SRT, not only as a result of his tenure, but due to his impressive work ethic, and dedication to excellence. Officer Joseph Derringer will be retiring from the Miami-Dade Police Department in June of 2010, and has already requested to be a Reserve Officer assigned to SRT; and WHEREAS, SRT has recently purchased replacement sniper rifles, therefore the gift will not affect the allocation of weapons to the remaining members of the unit; and WHEREAS, Florida Statutes �112.193 (2), provides that a law enforcement agency may present an officer who retires under any state or municipal retirement system, the officer�s service �handgun�, but there is no such provision in the Florida statutes for an officer to be presented a rifle, as a matter of law; and WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade Police Department would like to give Officer Joseph Derringer his sniper rifle, Remington 40X, Serial # 05519138, as a gift upon his retirement, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board approves the gift of sniper rifle, Remington 40X, Serial #05519138, to Officer Joseph (JD) Derringer, in gratitude for his many years of dedicated service to the Miami-Dade Police Department and the residents of Miami-Dade County. Burgess County Manager SUBJECT: Sniper Rifle Gift to Special Response Team (SRT) Officer Joseph Derringer STAFF RECOMMENDATION Recommendation It is recommended that the Board of County Commissioners (Board) approve the sniper rifle gift to Officer Joseph Derringer of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Special Response Team (SRT). Scope The resolution will authorize Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) to present to Officer Joseph Derringer his sniper rifle upon his retirement in June, 2010. Fiscal Impact/Funding Source The MDPD has recently purchased replacement sniper rifles; therefore the gift will not affect the allocation of weapons to the remaining members of the SRT unit. Track Record/Monitor The resolution will be implemented by the MDPD.
