Board of County Commissioners 7/8/2010 1E2 Deferred 9/9/2010 P
REPORT: Commissioner Jordan recognized members of the Transport Workers Union (TWU). Mr. J.W. Johnson, Vice President, TWU of America, Local 291, 19210 NW 10th Court, solicited the Commissioners to support for legislative items considered in Washington D.C. that would add federal dollars to the Miami-Dade Transit Agency (MDTA) and the State of Florida. He requested that some federal funds allotted for MDT’s capital expenditures and infrastructure improvements be used to hire additional bus/train drivers. Mr. Talib Nashid, President, TWU, Local 29, noted the TWU pioneered a referendum for voters to approve a mass transit rail system, and led the way in obtaining public support for the half-penny sales tax to fund transportation. He noted MDTA’s mass transit system was at great risk, and miles committed to under the Peoples Transportation Plan (PTP) were decreasing. Mr. Nashid announced that TWU would host a public rally on July 9, 2010 (tomorrow) at 2:00 p.m. on the west side of the Stephen P. Clark Center to educate the community on MDT’s issues and gain their support of its mass transit system. Reverend Jessie Jackson would be the guest speaker, he noted. Mr. Nashid invited the public, all County workers, and especially members of the County Commission to this event. Commissioner Jordan noted she was unable to attend but would send one of her staff members. She expressed appreciation to TWU for its efforts supporting resources for MDT.
