REPORT: | Assistant County Attorney Gerald Sanchez read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Assistant County Attorney Eugene Shy, Jr. advised the Committee members of an amendment offered by Commissioner Rolle, the sponsor, to change the language in item (ii) of Section 2 of this proposed resolution to read as follows: “…(ii) to commence developing the public awareness campaign as of August 1, 2010, with the entities identified above...” It was moved by Commissioner Rolle that the foregoing proposed resolution be forwarded to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) with a favorable recommendation with Committee amendment(s) to amend item (ii) of Section 2 to read “…(ii) to commence developing the public awareness campaign as of August 1, 2010 with the entities identified above…” This motion was seconded by Commissioner Souto, and upon being put to a vote, passed by a vote of 6-0. Commissioner Sosa commended Commissioner Rolle on bringing forth this proposal and noted the availability of matching State funds through the “Let’s Move” campaign, an initiative by First Lady Michelle Obama, for this effort. She asked to be listed as a cosponsor on this proposed resolution. The Committee forwarded this proposed ordinance as amended. Commissioner Rolle asked that the proposed resolution as amended be waived to the July 20, 2010, BCC meeting. Later in the meeting, Commissioner Sosa apologized to Ms. Lillian Rivera, Administrator and Ms. Olga Connor, Director for the Office of Communications and Legislative Affairs for the Miami-Dade Health Department, for the initiation of the efforts for community prevention and working together to fight obesity. She reminded the Committee members of her appointment to work with First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative called the “Let’s Move” campaign that would focus on childhood obesity. Commissioner Sosa noted her intent to present and provide updates on the “Let’s Move” campaign. She stated she would request the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) Chairman Dennis C. Moss to place a discussion item on a future BCC meeting agenda regarding this as well. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE MAYOR OR MAYORS DESIGNEE TO ESTABLISH A PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN RELATED TO OBESITY AND HEALTHY EATING AND ACTIVE LIVING BODY WHEREAS, First lady Michelle Obama has chosen as one of her main initiatives the Lets Move campaign aimed at reducing childhood obesity in the United States; and WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners desires to advocate for and to encourage Miami-Dade County residents, both adults and children, through a public awareness campaign to embrace lifestyles that combat obesity and facilitate and promote eating a healthier, more balanced and nutritious diet and that foster active living through exercise; and WHEREAS, many adults and children who reside in Miami-Dade County are overweight or obese and are at greater risk for the onset of many chronic illnesses, diseases and other afflictions, including, but not limited to, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, stroke, and hypertension; and WHEREAS, obesity and its ill-effects take a tremendous toll on the health and well-being of Miami-Dade County residents and negatively impact their productivity in the Miami-Dade County workforce or in the pursuit of an education, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: Section 1. The Board of County Commissioners hereby recognizes and declares that obesity and its ill-effects are serious public health threats to the health and well-being of adults, children and families in Miami-Dade County, and while individual lifestyle changes are necessary, individual effort alone is insufficient to combat the onset and rising tide of chronic illnesses, diseases and afflictions. Thus, this Board seeks to positively impact and change behavior of Miami-Dade County residents through a public awareness campaign focused on the promotion of healthy eating and active living through exercise and less sedentary lifestyles. Section 2.
