REPORT: Commissioner Monestime provided the order of the special presentation program, beginning with remarks from County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, followed by brief comments by Commissioner Edmonson, 35 seconds of silence, some survivors of the earthquake sharing their experiences, and concluding with presentations of honor. County Mayor Carlos Alvarez commended Commissioner Monestime for providing this presentation and stated it was unbelievable that a year had passed. He recalled that a year ago following a program similar to the one scheduled to take place in the lobby later today (1/12), an earthquake devastated Haiti. Mayor Alvarez noted he was proud that Miami-Dade County stepped up to the plate to give assistance and that County employees contributed more than $250,000 toward the relief efforts. He expressed special commendations for the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Department’s Urban Search and Rescue Team on the number of lives they actually saved. Commissioner Edmonson thanked Commissioner Monestime, on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, for commemorating the significance of this anniversary of the Haiti Earthquake and for remembering the continued suffering of our brothers and sisters in Haiti. She read comments into the record, pertaining to the devastation, initial relief efforts, and need for continued support from the County. Following the observance of a moment of silence, Commissioner Monestime opened the floor to comments from survivors of the earthquake and asked Ms. Gepsie Metellus, Executive Director, Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, to serve as translator. The following individual(s) appeared and shared their experiences: 1) Ms. Teresa Leo 2) Ms. Belmon Cassiers (phonetic) 3) Mr. Antoine Pierre Bontou 4) Ms. Alexandra Pierre 5) Ms. Marie Lafayette Jean-Baptiste 6) Ms. Mariesa Claude Prenard (phonetic), and 7) Ms. Jefta Moneseur (phonetic) Commissioner Monestime recognized Haiti’s Consul General Ralph Latortue to present certificates of appreciations to those first responders to Haiti following the earthquake. Mr. Ralph Latortue, Haiti’s Consul General, appeared before the Committee and expressed his sincere gratitude to the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department and other entities that provided assistance and relief efforts following the earthquake. On behalf of the government and people of Haiti, Consul General Latortue presented a token of certificate of appreciation in recognition of the MDFR Department. Assistant Chief Noel, MDFR, accepted the certificate on behalf of the entire Search and Rescue Team. Commissioner Monestime recognized the following organizations that responded to the call after the Haiti Earthquake: - Southeastern Conference of Seven Day Adventists - Notre Dame Diocese Catholic Church and Pastor Rev. Fr. Reginald Jean-Mary - Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center - Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami, Inc. and Founder and Executive Director Marleine Bastien - Amor en Acción - Bethel Apostolic Temple - Catholic Charities - Consulate General of Israel - Project Medishare for Haiti, Inc. and Michel Dodard, M.D. - Miami Medical Team - Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department’s Urban Search and Rescue Team - Shalom Community Church and Pastor Fanfan - Fraternity Baptist Church - Full Gospel Assembly and Pastor Aimee (phonetic) - Haitian American Nurses Association (H.A.N.A.), and - Miami Seven Day Baptist Church Commissioner Monestime explained that he was not able to recognize every individual and organization today that had provided assistance to Haiti after the earthquake; however, on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, the County Mayor, County Staff, and the citizens of this community, he expressed sincere thanks for the support everyone provided to the Country of Haiti. Commissioner Monestime asked everyone to stand as Father Reginald Jean-Mary performed the benediction. He invited everyone to join the Mayor and County Commissioners in the Stephen P. Clark Center’s lobby, following the benediction, for the opening ceremony of the photographic exhibit highlighting the history of Haiti and the January 12, 2010 Earthquake.
