TITLE
RESOLUTION APPROVING THE CITY OF MIAMI CO DESIGNATION OF NW 8TH AVENUE FROM NW 57TH STREET TO NW 62ND STREET AS �REV. DR. HENRY CURTIS MCDOWELL WAY�

BODY

WHEREAS, on October 14, 2010, the Miami City Commission adopted Resolution R 10-0442, which designated NW 8th Avenue from NW 57th Street to NW 62nd Street as �Rev. Dr. Henry Curtis McDowell Way,� in recognition of his contributions to the City of Miami and to the community, a copy of which is attached and incorporated by reference, and
WHEREAS, Dr. McDowell was the first African American Missionary for the American Missionary Association mission in Central Angola where he served for nearly 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. McDowell served on the Board of Directors for the Board of Homeland Ministries, was awarded the United Church Board for World Ministries Medallion for Missionary Service and the Harmon Award for Distinguished Service in the field of religion; and
WHEREAS, Dr. McDowell left retirement to organize the Church of the Open Door (Congregational) United Church of Christ in Miami, Florida where he served as pastor from 1959 to 1967, and grew it from infancy to a membership of over 400; and
WHEREAS, after passing away on November 10, 1989, his legacy and the substantial role he played for the Church and the community is still alive; and
WHEREAS, NW 8th Avenue from NW 57th Street to NW 62nd Street is a city street located in the City of Miami; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami wants the County to install signage indicating this co-designation on County street signs and traffic signal masts arms; and
WHEREAS, this co-designation is located in County Commission District 3.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Approves the City of Miami co-designation of NW 8th Avenue from NW 57th Street to NW 62nd Street as �Rev. Dr. Henry Curtis McDowell Way.�
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this Resolution to the City Manager of the City of Miami, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the City of Miami Police Department, and the City of Miami Fire Rescue Department.
