TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO REFRAIN FROM REDUCING FUNDING FOR THE HEAD START AND EARLY HEAD START PROGRAM AS PART OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENTS FISCAL YEAR 2011-2012 BUDGET

BODY
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County receives annual Head Start and Early Head Start funds administered by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to provide early childhood services to low-income families; and
WHEREAS, the New York Times reported that a $2 billion cut to the Head Start Program has been proposed in Congress; and
WHEREAS, a reduction in Head Start and Early Head Start funds would cause considerable reduction in much-needed services in our community and would only serve to impede potential economic recovery,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the United States Congress to refrain from reducing funding for the Head Start and Early Head Start Program when considering the nations budget.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to Members of the Miami-Dade Congressional Delegation.
Section 3. Directs the Countys federal lobbyists to advocate for Congress to refrain from reducing funding as set forth in Section 1 above, and authorizes and directs that the 2011 Federal Legislative Package be amended to include this item.
