TITLE
RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE MAYOR OR MAYOR’S DESIGNEE TO COORDINATE WITH THE DADE COUNTY FARM BUREAU TO IDENTIFY A LIST OF COUNTY PARKS THAT COULD FEASIBLY BE USED AS VENUES FOR FARMERS’ MARKETS FOR THE COMMUNITY

BODY

WHEREAS, farmers’ markets have become extremely popular throughout South Florida in recent years and are a welcome source of fresh and organic produce; and
WHEREAS, farmers’ markets can be cultural programming for, and are beneficial to, the community because they provide direct contact between producers and consumers, which serves to educate residents about how their vegetables are grown, breads are made and meat is produced; and
WHEREAS, our environment also benefits from farmers’ markets because they help to reduce: (1) the miles traveled to deliver food to commercial outlets; (2) vehicle pollution; and (3) the use of fossil fuels; and
WHEREAS, farmers’ markets also serve to help bring residents together by facilitating social interaction, recreation and cultural exchanges between various communities; and
WHEREAS, it would be further beneficial to the cultural development of County residents if the County provides venues in County parks for farmers’ markets so as to educate the public on food production; and
WHEREAS, the placement of farmers’ markets in appropriate County parks would also help to attract residents to these parks and showcase some of the County’s most scenic and family friendly recreational facilities; and
WHEREAS, the County should further collaborate with the Dade County Farm Bureau to identify appropriate County parks at which farmers’ markets could be feasibly held on a regular basis,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board hereby directs the County Mayor or Mayor’s designee to coordinate with the Dade County Farm Bureau to investigate the feasibility of hosting regular farmers' markets at appropriate County parks, to the extent consistent with the County’s Home Rule Amendment and Charter, and provide a list of such parks to this Board within 60 days of the effective date of this resolution.
