TITLE RESOLUTION DECLARING THE FIRST WEEK IN DECEMBER AS �MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AIDS AWARENESS WEEK� BODY WHEREAS, more than 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV/AIDS, and 40,000 new infections and 16,000 deaths are expected this year; and WHEREAS, one in five persons infected with AIDS is not aware of having the disease; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County has one of the highest AIDS infection rates in the United States; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County recognizes the importance of AIDS awareness in the community to help those whose lives have been affected by the disease and to prevent further transmission of the disease; and WHEREAS, December 1 each year has been declared �World AIDS Day� and is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of the HIV infection; and WHEREAS, the President of the United States, in recognizing December 1 as World AIDS Day has requested governments officials and the American people to join in appropriate activities to remember the men, women, and children who have lost their lives to AIDS and to provide support and comfort to those living with this disease, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board does hereby proclaim the first week in December, as MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AIDS AWARENESS WEEK in Miami-Dade County and urges all citizens to participate in activities promoting AIDS awareness. The County Mayor, or Mayor�s designee is directed to organize activities to take place during Miami-Dade County AIDS Awareness Week throughout Miami-Dade County to promote AIDS awareness including, but not limited to, activities to be held on December 1, which is observed as Worlds AIDS Day, where AIDS quilts are to be displayed at different government locations such as Miami International Airport, The SPCC Building, Port of Miami, etc. Additionally, the County Mayor, or Mayor�s designee, shall organize a vigil to be held at the West patio of the SPCC building from 6:30 PM � 8:00 PM on World AIDS Day, or such other place or time deemed appropriate, in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to the disease. |
