TITLE
RESOLUTION APPROVING THE CITY OF MIAMI CODESIGNATION OF NW 55 STREET FROM NW 12 AVENUE TO NW 16 AVENUE AS “FRANK LEGREE, JR. STREET”

BODY
WHEREAS, on November 13, 2008, the City of Miami Commission adopted Resolution R-08-0620, which codesignated NW 55 Street from NW 12 Avenue to NW 16 Avenue as “Frank Legree, Jr. Street”, a copy of which is attached and incorporated by reference; and
WHEREAS, Frank Legree, Jr. was born in Jacksonville, Florida; and worked most of his life as a blues singer, nightclub emcee and radio disc jockey; and
WHEREAS, he appeared in Miami with Jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and Sammy Davis, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Legree was a pioneer in breaking down racial barriers in Miami, where in 1957 he became the first African-American man to move into the then all-white community of Orchard Villa; and
WHEREAS, in spite of constant threats of harm and violence, Legree remained in the neighborhood and became a leader in the civil rights movement in this area; and
WHEREAS, Legree passed away in 2007; and
WHEREAS, NW 55 Street from NW 12 Avenue to NW 16 Avenue is a city street located in the City of Miami; and
WHEREAS, this codesignation is located in County Commission District 3,


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Approves the City of Miami codesignation of NW 55 Street from NW 12 Avenue to NW 16 Avenue as “Frank Legree, Jr. Street.”
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this Resolution to the City Manager for the City of Miami, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department, the Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami Police Department and Miami Fire Rescue Department.
