REPORT: First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Chairman Moss opened the public hearing for persons wishing to be heard in connection with this resolution. He closed the public hearing after no one appeared wishing to speak. Hearing no other comments or questions, members of the Board proceeded to vote on the foregoing resolution as presented.

TITLE
RESOLUTION APPROVING NAMING OF RECREATION CENTER AT TROPICAL PARK, LOCATED AT 7900 SW 40 STREET, AS THE �MARY ABREU COMMUNITY CENTER� AFTER A PUBLIC HEARING

BODY
WHEREAS, in 1989, Mary Abreu began her career with the Park and Recreation Department by working at McMillan Park, where she developed the very successful Tiny Tots program for younger children; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, Mary was promoted to Park and Recreation Manager 1 and assisted in the oversight of Amelia Earhart and Norman and Jean Reach Parks in North Dade; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, Mary was promoted to Park and Recreation Manager 2 at Tropical Park and was second in command of the park, managing the maintenance crews, softball operations and stadium; and
WHEREAS, in 2001, Mary was promoted to Administrative Officer 3 in the Office of Assistant Director of Operations, where her ability to function at a high level led to her promotion to Special Projects Administrator 1; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, Mary joined the Director�s Office, assisting with the overall operation of the Department, both operationally and administratively; and
WHEREAS, in 2010, Mary was promoted to Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator, reporting directly to the Director and responsible for all agenda items involving the Department; and

WHEREAS, Mary consistently proved herself through her abilities and commitment to this organization and to the people she worked with. Her love of people and her dedication to providing a positive impact to the lives of residents in our community through parks was evident in the many partnerships and relationships she built with the community and within the county, and she was a direct contributor to the Department�s success; and
WHEREAS, despite her own medical condition and courageous struggle, Mary Abreu�s determination and dedication to the Park and Recreation Department and her colleagues was relentless; and
WHEREAS, Mary Abreu, our beloved friend and colleague, passed away on October 31, 2011, after a long battle with cancer,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board, after a public hearing, desires to honor her memory and contributions by naming the recreation center at Tropical Park as the �Mary Abreu Community Center.�
