SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO H.T. SMITH, ESQ. IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Commissioner Monestime recognized Mr. H. T. Smith in honor of Black History Month. He noted Mr. Smith’s accomplishments, including being the first African-American Assistant Public Defender and the first African-American Assistant County Attorney. Commissioner Monestime said that in the late 1980s, Mr. Smith chaired the Free South Africa movement fighting against Apartheid; fought for and defended the rights of Haitian refugees jailed at the Krome Detention Center; and in the early 1990s, led the Boycott Miami Campaign which resulted in more harmonious relations within Miami-Dade County. In addition to co-chairing the Safe Neighborhoods Parks Bond Referendum, Commissioner Monestime said Mr. Smith led Fundraising efforts to build an NFL Youth Educational Town Center at Gwen Cherry Park.
Commissioner Monestime, on behalf of Mayor Carlos Gimenez, County Commission Chairman Joe A. Martinez and members of the County Commission, presented a proclamation to Mr. Smith proclaiming Tuesday, February 21, 2012 as “H.T. Smith Esquire Day.”
Mr. Smith expressed appreciation to Commissioner Monestime, Mayor Gimenez and Commission members. He expressed his desire to see a unified community.
