TITLE
RESOLUTION APPROVING THE STATE ROAD CODESIGNATION OF NW 125TH STREET (STATE ROAD 922) FROM NW 7TH AVENUE TO GRIFFING BOULEVARD AS �JEAN-JACQUES DESSALINES BOULEVARD� AND WEST DIXIE HIGHWAY (STATE ROAD 909) FROM NE 147TH STREET TO NE 2ND AVENUE AS �ALEXANDRE PETION BOULEVARD�

BODY
WHEREAS, during the 2004 regular session, the Florida Legislature passed House Bill 9, which codesignated NW 125th Street (State Road 922) from NW 7th Avenue to Griffing Boulevard as �Jean-Jacques Dessalines Boulevard and codesignated West Dixie Highway (State Road 909) from NE 147th Street (the north boundary of State House District 108) to NE 2nd Avenue as �Alexandre Petion Boulevard:� and
WHEREAS, Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a courageous leader of the Haitian Revolution from 1791 to 1804, bravely leading his troops to many victories; and
WHEREAS, Jean-Jacque Dessalines officially declared Haiti�s independence in 1804, and is known as the first ruler of an independent Haiti until his untimely death by assassination in 1806; and
WHEREAS, Alexandre Petion became the President of the Republic of Haiti following Dessaline�s death, and championed the ideals of democracy and freedom; and
WHEREAS, Alexandre Petion and Jean-Jacques Dessaline are regarded as two of Haiti�s founding fathers; and
WHEREAS, section 334.071, Florida Statutes, provides that the installation of road designation signs shall be contingent on the applicable county or city commission passing a resolution in support of the particular honorary road designation; and
WHEREAS, the designated portions of NW 125th Street and West Dixie Highway include state roads partially located in the City of North Miami; and
WHEREAS, the legislation directs the Florida Department of Transportation to erect suitable markers for these street designations; and
WHEREAS, the City of North Miami supports the codesignation, and wants the County to install signage indicating this codesignation on county street signs and traffic signal mast arms (City of North Miami resolution attached and incorporated); and
WHEREAS, these codesignations are located in County Commission District 2,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Approves the State codesignations of NW 125th Street (State Road 922) from NW 7th Avenue to Griffing Boulevard as �Jean-Jacques Dessalines Boulevard, and West Dixie Highway (State Road 909) from NE 147th Street to NE 2nd Avenue as �Alexandre Petion Boulevard.�
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this Resolution to the Secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation, the Clerk of the City of North Miami, the City Manager of the City of North Miami, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department and Land Development/ Right-of-Way Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department, the North Miami Police Department, and the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Department.
