TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO CODESIGNATE N.W. 14TH AVENUE FROM N.W. 69TH STREET TO N.W. 71ST STREET AS ��REV. ARTIS PERKINS AVENUE��; APPROVING THE CODESIGNATION

BODY
WHEREAS, Artis Perkins grew up in Statesboro, Georgia as the seventh child of Lonnie and Melrose Perkins; and
WHEREAS, Perkins moved to Miami in 1956, and in 1962, he married Julia Kelley; and
WHEREAS, in 1962, Perkins began a 33 year career in transportation with the then-Dade County Transportation Authority as one of the first African American employees as a Bus Operator, and later as a Supervisor; and
WHEREAS, when Metrorail began operating in 1984, Perkins became a Train Operator and later was promoted to Rail Supervisor, a position he held until his retirement in 1995; and
WHEREAS, in 1980, Perkins became minister of the Valley Grove Missionary Baptist Church, and on February 14th, 1981, he was officially installed as Pastor of Valley Grove Missionary Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Perkins served as Pastor of the Valley Grove Missionary Baptist Church for 27 years; and
WHEREAS, he was an ardent community activist and humanitarian, and for many years helped to feed and clothe the homeless; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Perkins died at the age of 74 on April 16, 2009; and
WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Julia Kelly Perkins; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Reverend Artis Perkins by urging the City of Miami to codesignate N.W. 14th Avenue from N.W. 69th Street to N.W.�71st Street as ��Rev. Artis Perkins Avenue��; and
WHEREAS, N.W. 14th Avenue from N.W. 69th Street to N.W. 71st Street is a city road located in the City of Miami; and
WHEREAS, this city codesignation would be located in County Commission District�3,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the City of Miami to codesignate N.W. 14th Avenue from N.W. 69th Street to N.W. 71st Street as ��Rev. Artis Perkins Avenue��.
Section 2. Approves the codesignation of N.W. 14th Avenue from N.W. 69th Street to N.W. 71st Street as ��Rev. Artis Perkins Avenue��.
Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the City Manager of the City of Miami, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department, the Land Development/Right-of-Way Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department, the City of Miami Police Department and the City of Miami Fire Rescue Department.
