TITLE
RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MAYOR OR MAYOR'S DESIGNEE TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE ARMED FORCES SERVICE CENTER FOR THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE MILITARY HOSPITALITY LOUNGE AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

BODY

WHEREAS, more than 1,200 military travelers and their families pass through Miami International Airport (MIA) each month; and
WHEREAS, the Armed Forces Service Center (AFSC), a recognized Section 501C charity, opened the Military Hospitality Lounge at MIA to replace the USO lounge that was closed due to budget cuts in 1998; and
WHEREAS, through the operation and efforts of the AFSC, the Military Hospitality Lounge makes travel through the airport more comfortable and less stressful for military travelers and provides a range of services free of charge, including snacks, soft drinks, telephone and internet access, printer and fax services, and emergency overnight accommodations; and
WHEREAS, the Military Hospitality Lounge is opened and staffed 365 days a year by an all-volunteer corps of hosts and hostesses and is funded entirely by community, corporate and individual sponsors and donors; and
WHEREAS, the facilities utilized at MIA for the Military Hospitality Lounge were previously leased to AFSC with no rental fees or charges, which is inconsistent with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements; and
WHEREAS, in order for the County to continue providing these invaluable services to military travelers, the County can provide the services itself by having AFSC operate the Military Hospitality Lounge at MIA,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board requests the County Mayor or Mayor's designee enter into an agreement with the Armed Forces Service Center to operate the military lounge at MIA.
