TITLE
RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE HORRIFIC ATTACK AT THE SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT AND EXPRESSING SYMPATHY AND SUPPORT FOR ALL THOSE AFFECTED BY THIS TRAGEDY

BODY

WHEREAS, on December 14, 2012, a mass shooting took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; and
WHEREAS, the people of Miami-Dade County wish to extend their sympathy to the Newtown community in this unimaginable tragedy and mourn the loss of 26 innocent lives, including 20 elementary school-age children; and
WHEREAS, the people of Miami-Dade County also would like to acknowledge the quick action of teachers, the school’s principal, law enforcement officials and other first responders whose heroic efforts prevented the loss of additional life, in some cases giving up their own lives to save the lives of young children; and
WHEREAS, the people of Miami-Dade County will always remember the victims of this mass shootings and stand in solidarity with the surviving students, parents, teachers and families, as well as the entire Newtown community,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Condemns the senseless attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday, December 14, 2012.
Section 2. Offers condolences to all of the students, parents, teachers, administrators and faculty of Sandy Hook Elementary School, as well as their families, and recognizes that the healing process will be long and difficult for the entire Newtown community.
Section 3. Honors the selfless, dedicated service of:
(A) the teachers, principal and school support staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, some of whom sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of innocent young children; and

(B) the emergency response teams and law enforcement officials who responded to the attack and who saved the lives of some of these young children based on their quick action; and

Section 4. Remains committed to working together to help prevent tragedies of this kind from ever happening again.
The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, and the Co-Sponsors are Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson, Commissioner Bruno A. Barreiro, Commissioner Lynda Bell, Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo, Jr., Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan, Commissioner Jean Monestime, Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, Sen. Javier D. Souto, Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez and Commissioner Juan C. Zapata. It was offered by Commissioner , who moved its adoption. The motion was seconded by Commissioner and upon being put to a vote, the vote was as follows:
