Board of County Commissioners 4/2/2013 1F1 Accepted
REPORT: Chairwoman Sosa introduced the foregoing report into the record. Commissioner Heyman introduced Beacon Council President, Ms. Robin Reider, and member, Ms. Johnson. She noted the County Commission recently passed a resolution directing the Beacon Council to begin addressing the issues of small businesses in accordance with its mission and to provide a progress report within 60 days. She noted she was pleased with the efforts made by the Beacon Council members towards compliance with the directive. Ms. Robin Reider, Interim President, Beacon Council Board of Directors, 80 S.W. 8th Street, Miami, appeared before the Board and expressed her appreciation to the Chair, members of the County Commission, and the Mayor for their support. She noted the search to fill the President’s position began on March 9th and, since taking over the position in the interim on March 8th, she has met with County Commissioners Bell, Heyman and Monestime to inform them of actions being taken by the Beacon Council to address the issues of transparency and small businesses. Ms. Maria Johnston, Regional Director External Affairs, AT&T, 150 W. Flagler Street, and Membership Committee Chair and One Community One Goal Steering Committee member at the Beacon Council, appeared before the Board and named several partner and member organizations that were committed to the economic development of this County. She provided a brief overview of the successful initiatives organized by the Beacon Council to promote economic development in Miami-Dade County and expressed her appreciation to the Board for its continued support. Commissioner Heyman highlighted the Beacon Council’s initiatives to open its membership opportunities to organizations outside of the Downtown area; to collaborate with existing Chambers of Commerce; and to have large corporations invite smaller corporations to attend their Grants, Mentoring, Access Breakfast, and other programs. Chairwoman Sosa expressed her appreciation to Ms. Reider and Ms. Johnston for their presentation. She expressed confidence that the Beacon Council would continue to work with the Economic Development and Port Miami Committee and keep the County Commission aware of initiatives.
