REPORT: First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Chairwoman Sosa opened the public hearing and called for persons wishing to appear before the Commission in connection with this proposed resolution. After hearing no one, she closed the public hearing. Chairwoman Sosa, and Commissioners Edmonson, Diaz and Heyman asked to be listed as co-sponsors to this proposed resolution. Hearing no further questions or comments, the Commission proceeded to vote on the foregoing proposed resolution as presented.

TITLE
RESOLUTION NAMING THE INTERIOR ROAD BETWEEN THE MIAMI-DADE FIRE RESCUE STATION 34 AND THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SOUTH DISTRICT STATION AS �MEMORIAL WAY� IN MEMORY OF LIEUTENANT DEWEY HENRY, POLICE OFFICER JOSE SOMOHANO, AND ALL FALLEN HEROES

BODY

WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue provides the most efficient and professional response to the broadest range of emergency incidents by having the best and most capable crew available at all times to initiate lifesaving efforts at the scene of any emergency; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County owns and operates more than 60 fire stations throughout the County, including Fire Rescue Station 34 (�Station 34�), located at 10850 SW 211 Street in Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Dewey Henry served Miami-Dade County residents with honor and distinction for 33 years, 14 of those years at Station 34; and
WHEREAS, on September 10, 1994, Lieutenant Henry and his crew responded to a warehouse fire; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Henry was pinned under heavy debris while selflessly attempting to save and preserve the property; and
WHEREAS, on that day, Lieutenant Henry, in the finest tradition of the service, answered his last fire alarm and died in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Police Department promotes a safe and secure environment, free from crime and the fear of crime, maintains order, and provides quality service in a courteous, efficient, and accessible manner; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Police Department serves the residents of unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade Police Department serves the residents of the South Miami-Dade community from the South District Station, located at 10800 SW 211 Street in Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Police Officer Jose Somohano served Miami-Dade County residents with honor and distinction for 4 years; and
WHEREAS, on September 13, 2007, Officer Somohano attempted to stop an erratically driven vehicle and pursued its driver on foot; and
WHEREAS, Officer Somohano was fired upon and shot by the suspect while heroically attempting to serve and protect the residents of Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, on that day, Officer Somohano, in the finest tradition of the service, ended his watch over the residents of Miami-Dade County, dying in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the extraordinary heroism displayed by both Lieutenant Henry and Officer Somohano, and in honor of all such acts of sacrifice by all our fallen heroes, this Board wishes to name the interior road between the east side of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 34 and the west side of the Miami-Dade Police South District Station as �Memorial Way�,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, names the interior road between the east side of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 34, located at 10850 SW 211 Street, and the west side of the Miami-Dade Police South District Station, 10800 SW 211 Street, as �Memorial Way�.
Section 2. Directs the County Mayor or Mayor�s designee to coordinate and work with the Commissioner of District 8 to install suitable signage identifying the interior road between the east side of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 34 and the west side of the Miami-Dade Police South District Station as �Memorial Way�.
