REPORT: | First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Chairwoman Sosa opened the public hearing and the following individuals appeared: 1) Mr. William Clark, Retired Firefighter, 1155 NW 126 Street, Miami, appeared before the Board in honor of Mr. Lawrence “Pop” McKenzie, a longtime friend and mentor. 2) Rev. Gary Johnson, 2320 NW 92 Street, Miami, appeared before the Board and presented remarks regarding the father figure role Mr. Lawrence “Pop” McKenzie played in his life and the legacy he left. Chairwoman Sosa closed the public hearing after no other persons appeared wishing to be heard. Hearing no further questions or comments, the Board proceeded to vote on the foregoing proposed resolution as presented. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING NW 17TH AVENUE FROM NW 84TH STREET TO NW 88TH STREET AS "LAWRENCE �POP� MCKENZIE WAY" BODY WHEREAS, Lawrence �Pop� McKenzie was born on April 6, 1931, the oldest of 7 children born to Luke and Olive McKenzie; and WHEREAS, McKenzie graduated from Booker T. Washington Senior High in the class of 1950, and joined the United States Air Force and served his country for five years; and WHEREAS, McKenzie would later meet and marry Retha Jones and through this union four children were born; and WHEREAS, in 1975, McKenzie graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor�s degree in education and would go on to teach for 25 years; and WHEREAS, during this time, McKenzie also was employed with Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department; and WHEREAS, McKenzie was assigned to numerous parks, but spent a great deal of his time at his neighborhood park, Arcola Park, where he was a frequent and important presence; and WHEREAS, Lawrence �Pop� McKenzie passed away on August 23, 2008; and WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor to memory of Lawrence �Pop� McKenzie and his contributions to the community by codesignating a portion of NW 17th Avenue near Arcola Park as �Lawrence �Pop� McKenzie Way�; and WHEREAS, NW 17th Avenue from NW 84th Street to NW 88th Street is a County road located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 2, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, codesignates NW 17th Avenue from NW 84th Street to NW 88th Street as �Lawrence �Pop� McKenzie Way�. Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department, the Development Services Division of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. |
