TITLE
RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE MAYOR, THROUGH THE PARK, RECREATION AND OPEN SPACES DEPARTMENT, TO CONDUCT A STUDY TO ASSESS THE TREE CANOPY AND GREENING IN COUNTY COMMISSION DISTRICT 8 WITH INTENT TO INCREASE SAME AND TO PRESENT WRITTEN RESULTS OF STUDY TO BOARD WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS

BODY

WHEREAS, the benefits of trees are widely known; they absorb carbon dioxide, produce clean air, increase aesthetic appeal and provide shade; and
WHEREAS, by designing large-scale urban tree programs and adopting tree ordinances that improve the shading of streets and parking lots, local planners can play a key role in expanding the canopy coverage of communities; and
WHEREAS, recently the Community Image Advisory Board adopted a program that is known as the Million Tree Miami program in an effort to plant 1 million trees in the County by 2020 in order to achieve a 30% canopy cover for Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon Commission District 8, both in furtherance of the Million Tree Miami program and the general well-being and beautification of District 8, to adopt and encourage programs that expand the tree canopy in urban and suburban areas, specifically along roads, parking lots, and other public facilities; and
WHEREAS, this Board desires to direct the County Mayor, through the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department (PROS), to conduct a study to evaluate the tree canopy and greening in County Commission District 8; and
WHEREAS, the study should include the identification of areas that would benefit from additional tree canopy and greening, suggestions for cost-effective and efficient plantings and methods for increasing the tree canopy and greening, and suggestions for ensuring the maintenance of existing tree canopies and greening, all with an aim towards increasing the tree canopy and greening throughout County Commission District 8; and
WHEREAS, the study should also include specific, segregated goals with timeframes and means of achievement with respect to increasing the tree canopy and greening of District 8, so that the community and not-for-profit entities can be engaged and solicited to achieve them,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board directs the County Mayor, through Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department (PROS), to conduct a study to assess the tree canopy and greening in County Commission District 8, with an intent to increase the tree canopy and greening in County Commission District 8 and approves the foregoing recitals and incorporates them herein by reference. The results of the assessment shall be presented to the Board within thirty (30) days of the effective date of this resolution.
