TITLE
RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE MAYOR OR MAYORS DESIGNEE TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING CULINARY SKILLS TRAINING FOR INMATES IN COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES AND THEN TO PROVIDE THE BOARD WITH A REPORT WITHIN NINETY DAYS

BODY

WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitations Department currently provides, pursuant to contract approved by Resolution number R-540-12, adult education courses to inmates within its facilities; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitations Department does not currently provide culinary skills training to inmates; and
WHEREAS, inmates are much more likely to successfully reintegrate into the local community upon their release if they have acquired skills that will permit them to find employment and steady income; and
WHEREAS, the rate of recidivism is likely to be reduced if inmates are given the tools necessary to become productive and law-abiding citizens; and
WHEREAS, providing culinary training in correctional facilities may give inmates a greater chance of becoming productive and law-abiding citizens,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Mayor or Mayors designee is hereby directed to study the feasibility of implementing culinary skills training for inmates at Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities, and provide a report for committee review on the details of the plan within ninety days of the effective date of this resolution.
