TITLE
RESOLUTION RENAMING THE SOUTH MIAMI-DADE BUSWAY TO THE ''SOUTH DADE TRANSITWAY''

BODY
WHEREAS, the South Miami-Dade Busway (the Busway) is a 20-mile roadway dedicated for bus service that runs south-southwest from the Dadeland South Metrorail station along US 1/South Dixie Highway to Florida City; and
WHEREAS, the Busway is operated by Miami-Dade Transit as a transit exclusive roadway connecting the communities and businesses in South Miami-Dade County to the southern terminus of the elevated Metrorail heavy rail system; and
WHEREAS, to better serve the transportation needs of County residents, this Board believes that the Busway should be improved to provide more effective transit services than is currently provided on the Busway; and
WHEREAS, numerous cities throughout the country, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, Cleveland and Boston, have developed robust transitways that include express bus service, bus rapid transit, and light rail transit; and
WHEREAS, on April 21, 2016, the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization adopted the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan which advanced six corridors, including the South Dade Transitway, to Priority 1 Funded and recommended conversion of the Busway from Enhanced Bus Service to Light Rail Transit and/or appropriate premium transit technology; and
WHEREAS, as a step towards fulfilling this Boards vision of expanding the Busway into a state-of-the-art transitway, this Board finds it appropriate to rename the South Miami-Dade Busway to the South Dade Transitway; and
WHEREAS, the South Miami-Dade Busway is a County roadway located partially in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and partially in the Cities of Homestead and Florida City; and
WHEREAS, Rule 9.02 of the Boards Rules of Procedure provides that resolutions regarding proposed naming, renaming or codesignation of Miami-Dade County roads, facilities or property shall be sponsored by the district commissioner where the road, facility or property is located; and
WHEREAS, this proposed renaming is located partially in County Commission District 7, partially in County Commission District 8, and partially in County Commission District 9,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, renames the South Miami-Dade Busway to the South Dade Transitway.
Section 2.
