Children's Trust's 2008 Summer Programs Guide |
|
The Children's Trust's 2008 Summer Programs Guide provides a comprehensive overview of all summer camps in Miami-Dade County and will be available in early May from any of the 67 Publix stores in the county, as well as from Miami-Dade Team Metro offices, City of Miami Neighborhood Empowerment Team sites, a number of local businesses and at The Children's Trust. The 2008 Summer Programs Guide lists more than 350 summer camp options for parents, ordered by geographic quadrants and zip code, as well as articles in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. Brief descriptions of the camps, their activities and ages served are included along with contact information, and for the first time, information on fees and/or scholarships is provided. The Children's Trust is the largest funder of summer camps in the county. Some 230 site locations, offered by Trust providers, are listed and clearly identified. Children's Trust funding allows these programs to offer a number of slots at no charge or at a discount. Once these slots or scholarships are filled, however, regular fees may apply. A few summer programs are specifically for children with disabilities, and most camps will accommodate these children. If your child has a disability, it is important to let the camp know in advance so any special arrangement can be made.

The Dade County Bar Association has launched a monthly, toll-free legal helpline that South Florida nonprofits and residents can call with their basic legal questions to get free advice. Called "LegalLine," the new service is staffed by volunteer attorneys from the county's private law firms on a rotating basis. Members of the public are invited to call 1-866-596-0399 from 6:00 - 9:00pm the first Wednesday of the month, except national holidays. Callers and attorneys remain anonymous, and questions are taken in English or Spanish across a wide range of legal specialties, including nonprofit incorporation, human resource issues, contracts and agreements, family, probate, criminal, personal injury, immigration law, etc.

The Miami-Dade County Community Action Agency has help available for income eligible residents who need assistance paying their gas or electric bills. Applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will be distributed beginning on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 (Monday thru Friday). The program offers a one time only home energy assistance to residents on a first come - first serve basis. In order to qualify for a $100.00 - $200.00 credit on utility bills, applicants must not exceed 150% of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines.
