The First Book National Book Bank distributes large quantities of publisher-donated brand-new books to programs serving children from low-income families. The books are free to organizations that are able to pick them up or just $0.25 per book to have them shipped. After registering with First Book, organizations will receive email notifications alerting them when book distribution applications are available. Eligible organizations must register with First Book and be a nonprofit organization with at least 80% of the children coming from low-income families, a Title 1 school, or a specially designated government institution.

The American Dream Down Payment Act is a down payment assistance initiative that allows grants to be given to participating jurisdictions to assist low-to-mid-income families and uniformed employees such as, policemen, firemen, sanitation, maintenance workers, and teachers who are employees of the participating state to achieve homeownership. Grants made available under this initiative may be used only for down payment assistance toward the purchase of single family housing by eligible families.

Free Grant Writing Workshops in Spanish |

The Miami-Dade Public Library System and the Foundation Center present free Grant Writing Workshops in Spanish. The first workshop deals with understanding the differences and objectives of independent, corporate, and community foundations. Learn how to identify grantseeking resources, how to effectively engage with funders and the purpose and importance of each component in a proposal package. The second workshop specifies key components of a proposal and how to get answers to questions about the process of applying for a grant. Also, you will learn how to prepare a budget. The Dade County Bar Association has launched a monthly, toll-free legal helpline that South Florida nonprofits and residents can call with their basic legal questions to get free advice. Called "LegalLine," the new service is staffed by volunteer attorneys from the county's private law firms on a rotating basis. Members of the public are invited to call 1-866-596-0399 from 6:00 - 9:00pm the first Wednesday of the month, except national holidays. Callers and attorneys remain anonymous, and questions are taken in English or Spanish across a wide range of legal specialties, including nonprofit incorporation, human resource issues, contracts and agreements, family, probate, criminal, personal injury, immigration law, etc.

The Florida Public Service Commission wants you to know that you could be eligible for savings on your monthly telephone bill by enrolling in one of these two programs: Link-Up Florida provides a 50% reduction in the telephone service hook-up charge, up to a maximum of $30.00, for qualifying households that do not currently have telephone service. Lifeline Assistance provides at least a $13.50 monthly credit on qualified residential customers' local phone bills. You can save as much as $162.00 per year. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program |

The Miami-Dade Community Action Agency's (CAA) Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will begin assisting income eligible residents with payment of their gas or electric bills beginning Monday, February 9, 2009. The LIHEAP provides financial assistance to help eligible households meet the rising cost of home energy expenses. This assistance is provided in the form of credit toward your bill. To be eligible an applicant's income must not exceed 150% of the poverty income guideline. Assistance to residents is offered on a first come - first serve basis; twice annually during winter and summer. Applications can be made in person or may also be downloaded from the County's web portal site at www.miamidade.gov/caa/liheap.asp. From computer classes and access to the Internet, to help in resume writing, job interviewing skills and test preparation, the Library wants to be help patrons prepare for and search for jobs. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department Water-Use Efficiency Program |

Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department is offering a Toilet Replacement Project program for senior citizens who qualify for the additional homestead exemption on their property taxes and those residents who meet the federal criteria for low income households. Participating homes must have been built prior to 1996. This retrofit project will install a toilet, showerhead, aerators to qualifying participants. Once application is received, the Community Action Agency (CAA) will contact the applicant for additional information necessary to process the application.

Modest Needs makes "Bridge Grants" by remitting payment to a creditor for a relatively small, emergency expense on behalf of an individual or family suffering from short-term unemployment due to the current economic downturn. In making a Bridge Grant, the goal is to allow a person who has recently become unemployed through no fault of his or her own and who has yet to find a new position or to begin receiving the unemployment benefits to which s/he is entitled to continue to look for work without having to worry (at least in the short term) about losing his or her home, car, health insurance, child care, or other items/services essential to an individual's ability to look for/accept new employment and/or to remain self-sufficient while that person is waiting for his or her unemployment benefits to start.

Action Without Borders/Idealist.org in partnership with Learning to Give announced a newly developed nonprofit career resources which is available at no charge to elementary, middle, and high school teachers, curriculum directors, administrators, career counselors, and youth workers. Educators may access and use grade-appropriate lessons to explain the importance of philanthropy, the role of nonprofit organizations, and the career opportunities available to young people within the nonprofit sector. South Florida Workforce Investment Board 2009 Summer Employment Program |

The South Florida Workforce will assist young adults to enhance their work readiness skills and pursue the best jobs possible for the summer. You may qualify to participate in the South Florida Workforce Investment Board's Summer Employment Program if you are: between 14-24 years of age, live in Miami-Dade or Monroe County, a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S., and low income. The selection of youth will be
done by a lottery process. The 8 thru 10 week program will provide young adults with summer jobs, work readiness skills and an opportunity to earn a paycheck by working in entry-level occupations at governmental agencies, non-profit and for profit agencies, hospitals and community based organizations on a part-time basis earning $8 to $10 an hour.
