The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting applications for the Boating Infrastructure Grant Program (BIG) for Fiscal Year 2009. The BIG provides funding for all States, the District of Columbia, Commonwealths, and territories that construct, renovate, and maintain either publicly or privately owned boating infrastructure tie-up facilities for transient, nontrailerable recreational vessels. These facilities must provide public access to get BIG funding. Eligible applicants include: any agency or agencies designated by the governor of a State, the District of Columbia, Commonwealth, and territory. Total Program Funding: $13,000,000. The Boat U.S. Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safe and environmentally sensitive boating. Through its Boating Safety Grants program, the foundation awards local volunteer organizations up to $4,000 each for the promotion of boating safety education. The foundation is looking for creative and innovative projects that promote safe boating on local waterways. Topics can range from literature on the effects of boating under the influence to signs at boat ramps telling users about free vessel safety checks. The foundation will fund volunteer boating groups, clubs, and associations, as well as local nonprofit organizations, including local chapters of national organizations. The foundation does not provide grants to government agencies, national or international organizations, for-profit businesses or individuals, or private clubs not open to the general public. The Women's Sports Foundation's Community Action Program (CAP) encourages communities to support and celebrate the grassroots participation and achievements of girls and women in sports and physical activity. This program brings together community leaders from youth-serving agencies, sports organizations, schools and businesses to promote girls' and women's sports in their local community. "Spread the Word" is designed to help CAPs carry out the Foundation's mission of increasing awareness through the distribution of educational and promotional materials at their events. Any officially registered CAP that is considered to have "Starting-Up" or "Active" status may apply. "Starting-Up" is defined as any CAP that has registered with the Foundation as of December 31, 2007. "Active" is defined as any CAP that has had at least one event between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2007. Application deadline: December 31, 2008.
The KaBOOM! Playspace project requires mobilizing community volunteers to build a new playground in just one day. KaBOOM! Provides ongoing opportunities for community organizations to build a new playground, ice rink, skatepark or refurbish a sports field. They are currently locating potential community partners in cities and towns across the US to create playspaces with KaBOOM! and their corporate partners. Ideal community partners are usually child-serving non-profit organizations, but can be community development organizations, neighborhood coalitions, schools or any organization that can mobilize a volunteer force and is in need of a new placespace! Ideal community partner candidates: should contribute up to $10,000 cash towards the cost of equipment; Serve children from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds; Provide land for the playground (at least a 50' x 50' space); Agree to insure and maintain the playground for the lifetime of the playspace; Provide food, water and restroom facilities for the volunteers on Build Day; Recruit 15 parent, community and staff volunteers to participate in planning committees; Recruit 50-100 parents and community volunteers to help build the playspace in one day; and Demonstrate enthusiasm, excitement and commitment to planning a community revitalization project. 2007 KaBOOM! opportunities are available in specific cities including Miami, Florida.
The Florida Sports Foundation's Major and Regional Grant Programs were established in 1996 to assist communities and host organizations in attracting sports events, which generate significant out-of-state economic impact for the state of Florida. Events that will be considered for grant funding include amateur or professional athletic events, or other categories approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors. The Foundation places emphasis on out-of-state economic impact, community support and image value to the state. Grant applications are only accepted through a regional Sports Commission in the State of Florida. All grant applications will be reviewed quarterly, and application deadlines are as follows: January 10, April 10, July 10, and October 10, annually.
The Bowerman Track Renovation Program, administered by Nike's Community Affairs department, provides matching cash grants to community-based, youth-oriented organizations that seek to refurbish or construct running tracks anywhere in the world. Special consideration will be given to existing running tracks in need of repair or refurbishment, and tracks located in low and moderate-income communities. Requests are reviewed quarterly and will be accepted on an ongoing basis through May 31, 2009.
The NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program is a partnership of the National Football League Youth Football Fund which provides funding for the program, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, which provides technical assistance and manages the program. The goal of the program is to provide nonprofit, neighborhood-based organizations with financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local football fields. The program provides grants of up to $200,000 for capital improvement projects. There are two levels of funding available: general field support grants of up to $50,000 (for irrigation, bleachers, lights, etc.); and field surface matching grants of up to $200,000 to help finance the resurfacing of a community, middle school, or high school football field. In order to be eligible for a grant, projects must be sponsored by nonprofit community-based 501(c)(3) organizations or middle or high schools. All organizations applying for funds must be located specifically and exclusively within NFL Target Markets and serve low to moderate-income areas within those markets. Strong preference will be given to proposals that: seek to upgrade existing facilities in poor condition or that are otherwise underutilized; demonstrate active use of the fields; attract matching funding that exceeds the minimum required match of 1:1; involve local partnerships with nonprofit community partners (i.e., parks and recreational departments, YMCA branches, etc.) to promote youth and community programming on the fields; and provide for continuing maintenance and field safety. Application deadline: December 15, 2008.
The American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Program provides grant awards for the purchase of permanent shade structures designed to provide shade and ultraviolet ray protection for outdoor areas. The academy also provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure promoting the importance of sun safety. The academy receives support for this program from Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company. The program is open to 501(c)(3) organizations that serve children and teenagers, age 18 and younger. To be considered, applicants must be sponsored by an academy member dermatologist and demonstrate a commitment to sun safety within their organization. The United States Soccer Foundation is providing support in the form of funds and credit for products and/or services for community organizations, schools, municipalities and other groups that offer soccer opportunities throughout the country. Funding categories include: program grants for soccer-related activities, enhancement grants for existing fields, and construction assistance for new fields. For 2009, the Foundation is focused on initiatives that develop soccer programs in economically disadvantaged urban areas encompassing populations of 50,000 or more.
