    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I have to register and/or pay a registration fee to attend your auction?
There is no registration and no registration fee. Our auctions are open to the public. However, you must be 18 years of age or older to bid.

How much should I expect to pay for a vehicle?
The Price of vehicles sold at auction is determined by competition among the bidders. The high bidder wins the right to purchase the vehicle for the amount of the high bid. Bid prices vary according to vehicle type, condition, year of manufacture, and the number of bidders competing to purchase the vehicle. Most vehicles sell for between $500 and $4,000. Some vehicles in exceptionally good condition, of newer manufacture, or with special features may sell for more than that. Motorcycles routinely sell in excess of $7,000. Non-running vehicles, vehicles in very poor condition, or vehicles with very high mileage may sell for less than average prices.

How long after I pay for a vehicle do I have to remove it?
You should remove the vehicle you have purchased as soon as possible. Miami-Dade County will not be responsible for any damage or loss to your vehicle after it has been sold to you, even though you have not yet removed it from County-owned property. In all cases, vehicles purchased at auction must be removed from County property not later than 3:30 P.M., on the Wednesday immediately after the auction. Vehicles not removed from County property may be turned over to the Public Works Department for disposal as abandoned vehicles.

Can I pay for my vehicle purchase with a credit card or a personal check?
We accept only MasterCard, Visa or a Cashier’s Check, drawn upon a U.S. bank in United States Dollars, and made payable to “Board of County Commissioners.” We do not accept CASH, money orders, bank drafts, or personal, company, certified, or traveler’s checks.

What kinds of vehicles do you sell at auction?
We sell County-owned vehicles that have been retired from service. We DO NOT sell seized or impounded vehicles. The vehicles we do sell include sedans (usually 4-door), pickup trucks, passenger and cargo vans, and occasionally, police motorcycles. Virtually all of the vehicles we sell are made in the USA. Most are Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep, or GMC.

Do I have to be a dealer to buy a vehicle at your auctions?
Our auctions are open to the public. You do not have to be a dealer to bid. You must, however, be 18 years of age or older to place a bid.

Where can I get a list of the vehicles to be sold at the next auction?
You can find a list of vehicles to be sold at the next auction here at this site. Just click on “Current Auction List.” The list is posted on this site approximately two weeks prior to the date of the auction.

How do I learn what's wrong with an auction vehicle marked "NR?"
You, the prospective bidder, must satisfy yourself as to the condition of the vehicle and what you think the vehicle is worth. We cannot speculate as to what it is that makes a vehicle not road-operable, nor to what extent repairs must be made to make the vehicle road-operable. If you buy a vehicle which has been designated as a “Non-Runner,” you the buyer assume full responsibility for any and all repairs necessary to make that vehicle road-operable.

I work for Miami-Dade County. Can I buy a county vehicle being sold at auction?
All County employees, EXCEPT EMPLOYEES OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY’S GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION (GSA), THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS, AND ANYONE ACTING AS AN AGENT FOR A GSA EMPLOYEE, may bid to purchase county-owned vehicles at our auctions. This rule exists to preclude conflicts of interest and protect the integrity of the auctions.

If I'm high bidder on multiple vehicles, and I don't want one of them, can I pay for only the vehicle or vehicles I want?
If you are a high bidder for more than one vehicle, you are expected to pay for all the vehicles you agreed to purchase. You cannot pick and choose among vehicles awarded to you; you must pay for them all or lose them all.

If I buy a vehicle at auction, can I have the title transferred in the name of another person or a business?
You choose to what name you want the certificate of title transferred, but you may not change that designation at the auction once you have made it. To transfer the title to someone other than whom you designated on the bid receipt, you must make an additional title transfer at the Tax Collector’s Office or at a license tag agency.

Do I have to pay sales tax on the purchase of any vehicle or vehicles I'm awarded at auction?
Sales tax is not collected at Miami-Dade County vehicle auctions. At the time you register your vehicle in order to obtain a license plate and an updated certificate of title, sales tax will be collected by the Tax Collector’s Office or the license tag agency.

Can I inspect the vehicles offered for sale at auction before the auction begins?
Vehicles to be sold at auction are available for inspection on the day of the auction, from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Inspection at any other time is not available to the general public or to dealers. For safety and liability reasons you will not be allowed to start or drive the vehicles.

What happens to any vehicles offered for sale at auction which do not sell?
Vehicles not sold at a particular auction will be rescheduled for sale at a subsequent auction.

How do I get to the auction site?
Our auction site is located at 6100 S.W. 87th Avenue, which is located between Sunset Drive and Miller Drive. For most bidders the fastest route is to use the Palmetto Expressway, exiting at either Sunset or Miller Drives. From the exit, proceed west to 87th Avenue. From Sunset, turn right and proceed past the water treatment plant (which will be on your left side). The very next left turn after the water treatment plant is the street you turn on to gain access to the auction site. From Miller Drive, proceed to 87th Avenue, and turn left at the 87th Avenue traffic signal. Proceed approximately 1/3 to 1/2 mile. Just after you pass the former Fire & Rescue Department Headquarters (on your right side), you will observe a large fenced area full of vehicles. This is the auction site. Turn right at the first side street past this site, and you will be on the street from which you may gain access to the auction site.
