Five Students Win Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust’s 2014 Homeless Awareness and Sensitivity Poster and Essay Contest

More than two hundred entries from twenty different Miami-Dade County Public Schools reviewed

Five Miami-Dade County Public School students took home prizes for submitting winning artwork and essays as part of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust’s annual “Homeless Awareness and Sensitivity Poster and Essay Contest”. Winners were announced at the monthly Homeless Trust Board meeting on May 30, 2014. This year's contest, a partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Project UP-START Homeless Education Program, resulted in the submission of more than 200 entries from more than 20 different elementary, middle and high schools. The contest is designed to combat bullying, teach students the best way to help the homeless and underscore the fact that homelessness has no age or borders.

“To read the essays written by formerly homeless students that tell about their own personal experiences and how they are overcoming tremendous obstacles was moving,” said Ronald L. Book, Chairman of The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust. “The accounts from these students – children – and the artwork shared with us, illustrate that students truly understand the role they can play in helping and respecting the homeless. It’s not a job just for the professionals; there is something everyone can do.”

The student winners are:

Winning students receive a Samsung Galaxy Tablet and their supporting teachers and/or administrators at the winning schools receive a Kindle Fire. Honorable Mentions were selected and will receive Target gift cards.
