MLK Day Community Service Events at Liberty Square, Edison Plaza and Robert King High Towers

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
In tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the national focus on community service, volunteers will lend helping hands at three public housing developments during the holiday weekend.

On January 17, several hundred volunteers with Hands on Miami are expected to spend the morning to jump start a long needed facelift at Liberty Square, one of the nation's oldest public housing communities. Activities will include the planting trees and painting the exterior of the residential units. Event sponsors include Target, Comcast, Liberty City Trust, Starbucks, the United Way, Miami-Dade County and the city of Miami.

Also on Saturday, 100+ volunteers will gather at the Robert King High Towers, to pick up litter along the Miami River shoreline. Participating organizations include AARP, Florida International University, Miami River Commission, the State Office of Representative Luis Garcia, Hispanics for Change, Columbian American Civic Community and Robert King High resident council.

On Monday, January 19, young adults with the AmeriCorps SFLUM (South Florida Urban Ministries) and City Year AmeriCorps are partnering together to bring the message of peace to low-income elderly residents. Youth volunteers will be hand painting benches with the theme of peace and distributing these benches to various locations in the community, including Edison Plaza public housing development in Little Haiti. Volunteers will also plant a new herb garden on the property near the community center.
