Public housing is intended for the most disadvantaged members of the community, i.e., extremely low-income, elderly or disabled residents.
The public housing program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Miami-Dade Housing Agency (MDHA) manages almost 10,000 units of public housing in 100 family and elderly developments. MDHA also manages several mixed-income housing developments charging rent to low-income families that can afford to bear some of the costs of housing.
Residents who need housing assistance must first apply for public housing. Applications for public housing are available only during the periods of open registration.
Once eligibility is determined, applicants are then placed on a waiting list compiled using a lottery-like system and are assigned a rank for public housing, the Section 8 Housing Voucher program, assisted living facilities and moderate rehabilitation housing. When an applicant reaches the top of the list, he or she will receive an offer letter.
