Because there are so many families who need affordable rental housing, the fairest way for housing authorities to select families is through a waiting list. Applicants for Miami-Dade Housing Agency's subsidized rental housing programs are placed on a ranked waiting list compiled using a lottery-like system. There is a single application for project-based units (Public Housing, Moderate Rehabilitation and Section 8 New Construction) and tenant-based units (Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher).
Applications for the new 2008 Waiting List will be accepted online beginning July, 2008. For people without Internet access or who need help completing the application there will be assistance provided at selected locations in the community from July 7-31.
The 2005 waiting list will be dissolved upon certification of the new wait list. Applicants that applied in 2005 who have not been called for an eligibility interview will need to submit this new online application to be added to the new wait list.
No applications will be accepted through the mail. Only one application can be submitted during the application period. It does not matter if an application is submitted on the first or last day of the application period. Applicants will immediately get a confirmation receipt. After the application period, they will then receive a letter notifying them of their rankings on the waiting list. Submission of an application does not guarantee that housing will be offered.
Important: The head of household must have a Social Security number to register online; however, applicants without a Social Security number will not be prohibited from applying. Call 786-331-5344 to schedule a separate intake session. To get information on how and where to apply for a card visit www.socialsecurity.gov.
