Can I apply for a position over the telephone?
You only may apply for jobs through our Web site. All employment applications must be completed online and submitted electronically. If you do not have a computer, you can use a computer available to the public.
How many applications can I fill out per position?
Miami-Dade County procedures require one application per position. Each time you want to be considered for a position, you need to send an application. Although one application per job is necessary, after you create a user profile, you only have to answer the questions that are specific to the job for which you are applying.
By getting information from the user profile, the time that it takes to complete a second, third or fourth application is significantly shorter than the time it took to set up the original profile. Each time you edit your profile, the new information will be dropped into each application stored in the database.
Is there a limit to the number of jobs for which I can apply to at any one given time?
The online application system requires that you apply for each job in which you're interested. If you are interested in being considered for employment in five different classifications, you need to submit five separate applications. As long as you turn in one application per job, there is no limit to the number of jobs.
What do you mean by classified and exempt service?
In the Miami-Dade County employment system, there are two categories of jobs:
- classified service and
- exempt service.
Classified Service
The classified service is the County's civil service system and consists of all positions not specifically exempted in Section 2-41 of the Code of Miami-Dade County. Employees occupying these positions are subject to the Personnel Rules for the Classified Service.
Among other important protections, once employees successfully complete their probationary periods, employees in the classified service earn seniority rights to the classifications in which they have served and have various appeal rights.
Exempt Service
Employees in positions exempted from the classified service by Section 2-41 of the Code of Miami-Dade County work at the discretion of their respective department directors.
What is the difference between an application and a profile?
ApplicationsAn application is what you use to let Miami-Dade County know that you are interested in being considered for a specific job. In the application template you will be asked to enter information regarding your work history, education, training, and other such subjects. After you submit one application, the data you entered in the very first application for employment will be automatically loaded and, if there aren't any changes, you will not have to re-enter the information.
Although automatically loaded, you can make changes to an application that has not been submitted. You can add to or change anything you have entered before such as updating your employment history, education or training, for example. Once you submit an application, you create a link among your profile, the application for employment and an open recruitment for a specific job.
Once submitted, applications cannot be updated or changed in any way. The information in the profile can always be changed. To change information on an application, a new one has to be created and submitted, even if it is for the same job.
Profiles
When you enter information such as your name, address and contact information you start creating a unique picture of yourself which is called a profile. That is how it is stored in the system, as your profile. Once you create your profile, you can make edits or changes to it as needed. You should edit the information if you get a new e-mail or street address or new telephone number.
The information on changes to profiles applies to external applicants only. Current Miami-Dade County employees can only update their email addresses online. Other changes to their profiles must be processed through their departmental personnel representatives (DPRs).
How are you going to use personal information?
The system requires that each applicant enter his or her birth date and the last five digits of his or her social security number. This information will be used with other personal characteristics such as your name and address to make sure each applicant profile is unique.
Why must I provide my social security number?
Miami Dade County Human Resources collects your Social Security Number for the following purposes: identification and verification, reconciliation, tracking, creating a record of your employment application and maintaining your password account. Social Security Numbers are also used as a unique numeric identifier and may be used for search purposes.
What should I have on hand before creating an application?
Completing the employment application is not difficult but will take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes to complete. Before you begin, you should have the following information or documents ready:
-
Driver's license number, license class and expiration date (if required)
-
List of employers, with employment dates and occupational titles
-
List of schools, with attendance dates and degrees earned
-
Licenses and certificates required, issue and expiration dates, names of licensing or certifying bodies
What documentation will I need if I went to school outside of the U.S.?
All applicants, at the time of the job interview, must show proof that they meet a position's minimum requirements. When a position requires a specific educational background, Miami-Dade County will accept degrees from:
- universities acknowledged by the International Association of Universities (IAU) and
- the IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education.
Miami-Dade County relies upon the information in the current edition of the IAU International Handbook of Universities.
Do I need to register for Selective Service?
The Military Service Act (50 U.S.C. App. 453.) requires that men ages 18 through 25 register with the Selective Service. Additional information is available from the Selective Service System, Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, Arlington, VA 22209-2425. They can also be reached at 703-605-4100 or by visiting the Selective Service System website.
Miami-Dade County Code Section 2-11.29 requires that all men who are selected for employment with Miami-Dade County provide proof of registration in the service. Proof must be submitted within 90 days of employment. Registration with the Federal Selective Service System is a condition of continued employment.
How do I find a job if I only have a job announcement number?
The system allows users to search for information in a variety of ways. To find a vacancy announcement for which you have only a number, follow on-screen instructions on how to conduct advanced searches. When you reach the data entry page, leave all fields blank except for the job opening ID field. A job announcement number and a job opening ID are one and the same.
How do I apply for a job?
Miami-Dade County only accepts online applications for employment. One may be submitted in response to an announced vacancy or to express an interest in employment.
When responding to a print media ad or online posting, your application will be linked to a specific vacancy (job opening number) and your qualifications will be screened against the announced job requirements.
When expressing a general interest in employment or applying without a job, your application will be saved in a database available to hiring managers and recruiters. If you have indicated that you possess knowledge, skills and abilities the county is seeking in a prospective employee, you may be contacted to apply or interview for a specific position.
