Veterans' Preference
It is the policy of Miami-Dade County to to give preference to eligible veterans and spouses of veterans in the filling of non-exempt vacant positions,in accordance with state law requirements. Veterans preference does not apply to certain exempt positions, such as department directors.Eligibility
Preference is extended to:
-
veterans with a service-connected disability.
-
the spouse of a veteran who cannot qualify for employment because of a total and permanent service-connected disability.
-
veterans who have served during a period of war.
-
the unremarried widow or widower of a veteran who died of a service-connected disability.
Claiming Preference
When claiming veterans preference you must:
-
complete the Veterans' Preference section of the job application and
-
submit Veterans' Preference Documentation within three calendar days of the position's closing date -- four, if Monday is a legal holiday.
Preference will not be awarded unless the documentation is complete. Documents that arrive after the deadline will not be accepted.
Do not submit originals as documents cannot be returned. Copies should be marked to show the job posting number and classification for which you are claiming preference.

Promotional Provisions for County Employees
Miami-Dade County employees who leave their employment to serve in the armed forces may be eligible for veterans preference for promotion upon their return to the workforce.
To be eligible, the veteran must have had an honorable discharge from the armed forces and be reinstated as a County employee within the timeframe prescribed to their respective military tours.
Summary of Changes effective July 1, 2007
- Preference eligibility no longer expires upon appointment of the eligible person to a position with the state or any position or any political subdivision in the state.

Persons who were previously ineligible for preference because they held or are currently holding a job with a public employer are now eligible to use their veterans' preference again with all employers covered by law.

Persons who were previously ineligible for preference because they did not serve during an eligible wartime period may now be eligible for veterans' preference if they served during Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom.
