Basic Employee Development Classes

Miami-Dade County offers the following classes for non-supervisory employees. The eLearning classes are available online, on-demand, at no cost to the department, and can be accessed at any time.

Customer Service and Communication - CSCN

This workshop focuses on effective communication with co-workers and the public.  Understanding the need to provide excellent customer service and how it permeates throughout the County and spreads out to County residents.  Group exercises and video supplement the course material.

Ethics - ETHN *

This workshop is a required course for all Miami-Dade County employees. Topics covered include how Ethics plays an important role at the workplace, learn about ordinances relating to Ethics, understand the roles of the Ethics Commission & Public Trust and Office of Inspector General (OIG), address recent regulations, advisory opinions, and County policies.

Grammar Clinic - GRMN

This workshop is designed to renew grammar skills.  Clinic content is based on frequently asked questions posed by County employees.  The presentation includes review of grammar mechanics with a practical and fun approach.  Exercises complement the presentation and reinforce the participant’s understanding of that content.

Interviewing Made Easy - IMEN*

This workshop provides practical information on the interview process.  This class provides an insider view on how interviews are conducted, what to expect in an interview, and the post-interview processes that take place.  Students learn the interview process from both the interviewer and interviewee perspectives.  Tips on interviewing techniques, proper business attire, and how to prepare an impressive resume and the interview itself are covered.

Know Your County Government - KYCG*

This workshop is a required course for all Miami-Dade County employees. Topics covered include a history of Miami-Dade County, County form of government, senior staff and elected officials, the county's web portal, departments' background information, importance of customer service, and relevant information that benefits County employees internally and externally as County residents.

Mind Mapping - MMN

Improve your memory, retention, and understanding.  In this a two-and-a-half hour clinic, we'll explore the three most common uses of this visual thought organization technique.  Seminar participants will learn how to better organize thoughts in writing, problem solving, and note taking.  Come learn the benefits of Mind Mapping by trying out this pictorial technique of diagramming and clustering concepts to make learning and retaining information easier and faster.  If you think visually and feel overloaded by information, this might be the right seminar for you.

Resume Clinic - RESN*

This workshop gives participants the tools to revise their resumes.  The clinic is divided into lecture and hands-on revision.  Time is spent on reviewing the purpose of the resume, current formats, vital information, presentation, and submittal.  Participants then have the opportunity to put what they’ve learned into practice.  At the conclusion of the clinic, participants have a head start on specific revisions and the tools to make further resume revisions.

Service Excellence - SE*

This workshop is a required course for all Miami-Dade County employees. This workshop gives participants a good foundation on meeting the County's Vision Statement, "Delivering Excellence Every Day."  Participants will learn that Service Excellence is a major sub-component of Results Oriented Government.
Taking customer service up a notch by providing Service Excellence to internal and external customers is the main focus of this workshop. By the end of this workshop, participants will also have a better understanding of the County's strategic planning model and how they add value to the organization.

Speaking About Results That Matter - SRM

This class is invitation only. If you are interested in this class, go to eNet and sign up through Bluebook. Once you have registered, you will receive an e-mail with more information.

The Speaking About Results That Matter class will focus on customizing the facts contained in the Speakers Bureau Toolkit into an effective oral presentation. Students will have an opportunity to gain skill, confidence and fluency in presentational public speaking, while developing an understanding of public speaking strategies and how these can be applied to variety of speaking assignments.

Stress Management – STMN

This workshop highlights major sources of stress, how to identify the symptoms, and how to create an action plan to cope with it.  A personal checklist is used to self-evaluate your current level of stress and the development of goals to reduce and eventually, eliminate negative stress.  Learning how to anticipate stress, manage it, and avoid burnout is also covered.  A video supplements the course material.

This workshop provides a better understanding how to effectively work in a diverse work environment, learning about workforce trends, and following County policies and procedures.  Biases, stereotypes, perceptions, and assumptions are examined and discussed.  Group exercises and video supplement the course material.
