    Thanksgiving takes place on November 27 this year, and in honor of the occasion, County offices will be closed Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28. Miami-Dade Transit will operate on a holiday schedule November 27. Trash and recycling services will operate on a normal weekday schedule.

    As you give thanks and celebrate the holiday with loved ones, take some time to enjoy the following activities and resources that are sure to make your Thanksgiving the best ever:

    • Check out these great online Thanksgiving Day resources offering a wealth of information, including travel tips, cooking recipes and advice, and ways in which you can show your thanks to those in the military who are spending the holidays away from their loved ones.

    Tips

    • Don't let your Thanksgiving feast become a fire hazard! These holiday cooking safety tips will help make your meal memorable for the right reasons!
    • The holiday season is also the dry season in South Florida. Water restrictions are still in place, but you can still celebrate the holidays while learning new ways to save water. Read our Tips for the Holiday Season.

    • Can the grease! Avoid an expensive repair bill this holiday season: don't pour cooking grease or oil down your drain! Visit the Environmental Resource Management website to find out how to get rid of your old cooking grease.

    Activities

    • Why watch a parade on television when you and your family can come out and be a part of the fun? Now in its 34th year, the annual North Miami Winternational Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 27 is a South Florida tradition you won't want to miss!
    • For those looking for a fun way to work off their holiday meal, Miami-Dade Park and Recreation is sponsoring the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot on November 27, which features a 5K walk/run and 10K run at Tropical Park. Sign up now to reserve your spot! If you'd like to walk with the animals while working off your meal, check out the Turkey Trail at Metrozoo from November 23 through 25. The 3.5-mile trail can help make an enjoyable dent in your holiday calorie consumption!
    • The day after Thanksgiving means two things -- leftovers and the start of the holiday season! Get a jump on the fun by visiting Santa's Enchanted Forest at Tropical Park now through January 7.
    • Celebrate a holiday tradition at Bayfront Park by attending the official tree-lighting ceremony on the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 28 from 7:30 p.m. to 8: p.m. The free event will include live holiday music along with the lighting of the tree.

    The Gift of Giving

    • Help those in need enjoy the bounties of this Thanksgiving holiday. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Greater Miami Chapter is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the Safespace Domestic Violence Shelter and Concerned African Women, Inc.
    • For those who want to celebrate the spirit of giving this holiday, consider volunteering your time to those less fortunate this Thanksgiving. Camillus House and Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly are just two of many organizations that will welcome your time and services. Find out how you can help today.
