Why the IRP?
The IRP was created to do external community fact-finding and dispute resolution. IRP staff and Panel members carefully review Police internal affairs investigations to help expose wrongdoing and to come up with recommendations that will help improve Police/Community relations. A similar review process is done for the other County department complaints; most of the other departments do not have an internal affairs investigative unit.
The members of the IRP are citizen volunteers that hold public hearings of cases that deserve formal investigation and special attention.
The ordinance establishing the IRP also allows the Panel to conduct special inquiries and community grievance meetings.
