Taipei County is an extension to Taipei City and has a population of approximately 3,500,000. It's strategically located in the central point of the west Pacific Basin, and is intersected by Japan and West China. Up until the 17th century, the area served as a midway station for business vessels from western Europe. Taipei's rich history and strategic trading location for merchants has made Taipei County one of the most culturally diverse in East Asia.
Traditional industries in Taipei County have given way to the new capital-intensive operations, commercial districts, and diversified industrial developments. Many undeveloped industrial zones and residential areas have been transformed into commercial districts or industrial parks that are completely modern. Most of Taiwan's factories producing textiles and wearing apparel are located in Taipei County as well as the manufacture of electronic products and components, electrical machinery and equipment, printed materials, precision equipment, and foods and beverages. Services related to commerce, transportation, and banking has become increasingly important.
Taipei City is also the home of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), which is a non-profit government co-sponsored trade promotion organization that assists Taiwan businesses and manufacturers in reinforcing their international competitiveness and cope with challenges in foreign markets.
Taiwan was Miami-Dade County's #31st trading partner in 2007. The amount of trade with Taiwan totaled $532,010,248, with total exports of $54,010,737 and total imports was $477,999,511. Miami-Dade has enjoyed a Sister City relationship with Taipei County since 1989.
