Welcome to the Juvenile Services
The Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department (JSD) is committed to the youth and families of Miami-Dade County
JSD allows representatives from law enforcement and social services to work together under one roof to provide a complete range of services for both at-risk youth and youth involved with the Juvenile Justice System.
Formerly known as the Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC), the facility has served as a centralized processing, referral, and evaluation center for over 195,000 juvenile arrests in Miami-Dade County, and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Miami-Dade leads in alternatives to youth arrests
Miami-Dade, Monroe and Pinellas counties lead the state in using a new program that aims to keep young people who commit minor crimes out of the juvenile justice system by allowing police to issue "civil citations" and prescribe community service or intervention programs, rather than arresting them, a new study has found.

JSD Highlighted in National Juvenile Justice Arena

Juvenile Services Department receives 2014 Achievement Award
The Miami-Dade Juvenile Services Department (JSD) was awarded the 2014 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for its innovative Miami-Dade Juvenile Detention Alternative Program (MDJDA). MDJDA is an ongoing collaborative partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and our local Juvenile Justice stakeholders. The program is designed to reduce the number of non-violent juvenile offenders entering secure detention and the cost associated with incarceration.
MDJDA provides early identification of service needs and effective supervision through Global Positioning Systems (GPS). According to Morris Copeland, Director of the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department, “MDJDA is what JSD represents. It is a less restrictive and more humane juvenile justice process that keeps our youth out of the correctional system while providing much needed wraparound services in their own communities. This and the cost savings that result to Miami-Dade County are key to the program’s overall success.”
The Miami-Dade County Prevention Initiative is designed for any youth 17 years of age and under who may be experiencing behavior and family difficulties, as well as those at risk of being arrested.
Data and Records
The Data & Records Unit specializes in maintaining records for all juvenile arrests in Miami-Dade County and are retained according to State and Federal guidelines. The Department’s Quest data/case management system has the capability of analyzing data and generating reports on numerous person and case variables.
