Global Positioning System (GPS) Program

The Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department has implemented the Juvenile Secure Detention Alternative Pilot Project. With the support from juvenile justice partners, this initiative will offer Miami-Dade County and juvenile justice partnering agencies a more efficient, cost effective and less restrictive alternative to secure detention placement.  This program utilizes a Global Positioning System (GPS) device for monitoring detainable non-violent offenders, who are pending trial. In order for youth to qualify for the program, they must meet the established eligibility criteria.

Benefits include:

  • Youth awaits court hearing at home rather than in detention center
  • Monitoring includes court hearing reminders
  • Savings to the Department and the juvenile justice community
  • Assessments and services are offered to participants
