MAM & Schools
2005-2006
Exciting exhibitions and educational programs bring international
art of the 20th and 21st centuries to life, stimulating the imagination
and inspiring new ways of seeing and thinking.
Museum visits
Tours for Grades K-12
Visits to Miami Art Museum inspire students to engage with the
dynamism of modern culture and develop visual literacy. School
tours promote self-expression and language arts through observation,
analysis and interpretation of the art of our times. MAM’s
inquiry-based tours complement school curricula and promote
the critical thinking skills emphasized by Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test (FCAT) guidelines. Led by MAM’s professional
gallery teachers, tours are approximately 60 minutes in length
and culminate in an interactive exercise.
MAM provides free buses to Miami-Dade County Public Schools
teachers scheduling museum tours on a first-come, first-served
basis. The museum offers tours Tuesdays through Fridays at 10am,
11am, or noon throughout the academic year. Tour admission is
$1 per student; fee waived for Title 1 schools.
Classroom Pre-visits
MAM invites teachers to schedule free classroom pre-visits by
the museum’s gallery teachers to prepare students for
a stimulating visit to MAM.
Self-guided Tours
You are invited to bring your class to visit the museum on your
own anytime during regular museum hours. There is no admission
charge for students with ID. MAM asks that you notify us in
advance if you are planning a self-guided visit.
Teen Talks
Miami Art Museum provides regular opportunities for high school
students with a special interest in art to participate in informal
discussions with artists or curators. Teen Talks focus on exhibitions
and MAM’s collection.
Resources for Teachers
Teacher Workshops
Twice a year MAM offers educators professional enrichment workshops
designed to explore teaching strategies and interdisciplinary
connections to works of art in MAM’s permanent collection
and special exhibitions. Workshops include private tours, hands-on
activities and discussions with curators, artists, or scholars.
Each workshop offers the opportunity to network with colleagues
and share perspectives on new approaches to education.
Curriculum Resource Units
Materials for classroom use and distributed at each Teacher Workshop.
These resource units provide teachers with visuals, background
information, and suggestions for curricular applications. For
teachers unable to attend, a limited number of the CRU’s
are available on a first-come, first-served basis for an $18
shipping and handling fee.

MAM is Proud to be a School Partner
Museum Magnet Program
MAM is one of seven cultural organizations selected to participate
in an innovative school-museum partnership in Miami-Dade County.
MAM is working alongside Southside Elementary and Shenandoah
Middle School to develop exciting new ways of integrating curricular
needs with artworks and the museum experience.
Scholastic Art Awards
Each year MAM hosts the Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition
in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. This
showcase of the best work produced by young artists in both
public and private schools is a tribute to students and their
teachers. Regional winners go on to national adjudication.
In 2005, Miami boasted 31 national winners!
Miami Art Museum's education programs for audiences ages 5 to
18 years of age are supported in part, by MAM's Annual Education
Fund.
