Visual Poetics: Art and the Word
April 25 – November 16, 2003
Plaza Level Gallery
Visual
Poetics: Art and the Word presents fifty-six works by an international
roster of artists, focusing on the interaction of word and image.
The exhibition is a richly varied display, involving several languages
and many media, from small, intimate artists’ books, to large
expressionistic paintings. Some artists pair text with image, while
others employ words as compositional devices. In many cases language
is the image itself. Visual Poetics explores three main themes—language
as form, language and politics, and language that imbues a work with
psychological content. The exhibition features works by such artists
as José Bedia, Jenny Holzer, Michel Majerus, Stéphane
Mallarmé, André Masson, Rivane Neuenschwander, Tom
Phillips, Ed Ruscha, Carrie Mae Weems, and Christopher Wool. The
works are drawn
from MAM's permanent holdings and from private collections, including
the internationally renowned Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete
and Visual Poetry.
Organized by Miami Art Museum and supported by Miami
Art Museum's Annual Exhibition Fund. Curated by MAM Associate Curator,
Cheryl
Hartup.
