Miami Art Museum Presents
Miami Currents: Linking Collection And Community

On view October 30, 2002 through March 2, 2003

MIAMI, September 16, 2002 -- Miami Currents: Linking Collection and Community presents works from MAM’s six-year-old collection with its unique Miami perspective, revealing unexpected connections among artists from diverse cultures, geographical locations, and generations. Including more than 150 works drawn from MAM’s permanent holdings and loans from area collections and beyond, the exhibition reflects MAM’s dedication to international art with a focus on art of the Western Hemisphere from 1940 to the present.

“Miami Currents is a benchmark for MAM,” said Suzanne Delehanty, director of Miami Art Museum. “Creating a permanent collection for our metropolitan area was one of the key goals the public set for the Miami Art Museum, when MAM was established in 1996 through a unique community-wide planning process. Miami Currents gives us a chance to look at the collection’s progress, which has grown faster than we even imagined thanks to the generosity of our trustees and special donors. It also gives us a chance to dream about what the collection will look like 100 years from now.”

Organized by Miami Art Museum’s curators – Peter Boswell, assistant director for programs/senior curator; Lorie Mertes, curator; and Cheryl Hartup, associate curator – the exhibition occupies two floors of MAM’s gallery space. Works in painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation are organized into five thematic sections:

• Shifting Tides, New Worlds
• The Natural World
• The Material World
• The Immaterial World
• Undercurrents, Looking at the Art of our Time

Miami Currents opens in MAM’s Upper Level Gallery with Shifting Tides, New Worlds. The starting point of this section begins with the dramatic rupture that occurred with the outbreak of World War II, when many influential artists, dealers, and collectors fled Europe and relocated in the Americas. Since that time, developments in communications and travel as well as continuing political upheavals have increasingly led to a worldwide ebb and flow of art, artists, and influences across borders and between cultures that is unprecedented in the history of art. Shifting Tides, New Worlds examines the exchange between global and regional impulses in art, between commonality and diversity, and between abstraction and representation. Artists represented in this section include José Bedia, Leonora Carrington, Francesco Clemente, Edouard Duval Carrié, Adolph Gottlieb, Alfredo Jaar, Anselm Kiefer, Wifredo Lam, María Martínez-Cañas, André Masson, Roberto Matta, Man Ray, and George Segal.

In the following three sections, viewers embark on an artistic journey of discovery through The Natural World, The Material World, and The Immaterial World. Using these universal themes, these sections explore connections among artworks that speak to each other across cultures, geographical boundaries, and generations. In The Natural World, works by such artists as Rineke Dijkstra, Naomi Fisher, Nancy Graves, Jim Hodges, Ana Mendieta, Joan Mitchell, James Rosenquist and Lorna Simpson explore images of growth, beauty, and fertility as well as mankind’s relationship and interactions with the natural world. The Material World features artists who draw inspiration from everyday objects and man-made environments, including Marcel Duchamp, Walker Evans, Ann Hamilton, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Gabriel Orozco, and Ed Ruscha. The Immaterial World includes works that convey notions of transience, absence, and transcendence. Featured are works by Carlos Alfonzo, Miroslav Balka, María Fernanda Cardoso, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Irwin, Nam June Paik, Susan Rothenberg, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Accompanying the Upper Level Gallery installation of Miami Currents is a section in the Plaza Level Gallery titled Undercurrents, Looking at the Art of our Time. This section examines the visual language of art since 1940, focusing on the interplay between abstraction and representation, and the artists’ use of suggestion and ambiguity to include the viewer as a partner in the art process. Included will be works by Christo, Lynne Golob Gelfman, Guillermo Kuitca, Morris Louis, Hans Hofmann, Robert Rauschenberg, and Gerhard Richter. Undercurrents remains on view for one month following the closing of Miami Currents, until
April 6, 2003.

Miami Currents: Linking Collection and Community is organized by Miami Art Museum and supported by special grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Miami-Dade County, and MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund.
