(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and members of the Wireless Miami-Dade Steering Committee and Police Department are launching free wireless service in conjunction with a public safety initiative at Tamiami Park. The March 24, 2008, launch is part of the Mayor's Wireless Miami-Dade Initiative, a six-month pilot project. The free wireless service and public safety program, sponsored by Motorola, is the second in a series of wireless parks to go online.
In addition to the free wireless service to be offered at Tamiami Park, wireless security cameras have been installed throughout the park and fair grounds for added safety and protection. Miami-Dade Police vehicles equipped with laptops enable officers to log on and view real-time video of what goes on at the park and fair grounds at any given time. Media will have the opportunity to video-tape inside of police vehicles at the launch.
In the coming weeks, two additional Miami-Dade County Regional Parks, with the assistance of additional vendors, will also begin to offer free wireless service. They include Goulds Park (Wialan) and Amelia Earhart Park (Cisco).
"Through our partnership with Motorola, County residents have access to free wireless service, but that's not all," said Mayor Alvarez. "Our community also now has an added layer of safety and protection."
Wireless Miami-Dade is an initiative to create an environment that is technologically appealing to citizens, visitors and businesses. For more information on the Wireless initiative, visit www.miamidade.gov/mayor/wireless.asp.
