Miami-Dade County reclaims water

South Dade pilot plant turns wastewater into reusable water

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
As part of Miami-Dade County's long range plan to recycle nearly half the water it uses, the Water & Sewer Department (WASD) has constructed a water reclamation pilot plant at its South District Wastewater Treatment Plant in south Miami-Dade County. This new technology will be showcased at a news conference on Friday, May 22, 2009, at 10:00 a.m.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, along with Commission Chairman Dennis C. Moss, members of the Board of County Commissioners and WASD officials, will unveil this new technology to the media. Attendees will be able to see water that has been processed through various stages of treatment, including micro-filtration, reverse osmosis and disinfection via ultraviolet light and peroxide.

The media will also be updated on the progress of the 14 High-Level Disinfection (HLD) projects which will allow large-scale water recycling to take place.  The project, which began more than a year ago, is making incredible progress and creating hundreds of construction jobs.

Due to security restrictions at the South District Plant, all media must RSVP with Owen Torres at 305-375-1545 or e-mail  owen.torres@miamidade.gov by Thursday, May 21, 2009.
