Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez launches two employee campaigns to promote community wellness

Employees, residents and visitors are invited to County’s “Fall into Wellness Fair” promoting healthy communities

(MIAMI, October 11, 2013) – Miami-Dade County is hosting its second Wellness Fair on Friday, October 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in the Stephen P. Clark Center’s Atrium and West Courtyard, located at 111 NW 1 Street, in Miami.  Employees, residents and visitors will have an opportunity to participate in fun and engaging wellness activities coordinated by County departments, nonprofit organizations and local vendors, who will share products and educational material to promote healthy lifestyles.

This event is part of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez’s Worksite Wellness Initiative, which encourages healthy lifestyle habits for all employees.  Each department will have Worksite Wellness Coordinators providing regular information to employees and coordinate opportunities to eat well, stay active, and live well.   This effort will be modeled after the successful Worksite Wellness Park Fit Program launched by the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department which has led to employees getting healthy together; including a total of 190 employees demonstrating tangible improvements to their health.  Mayor Gimenez will also launch the County’s Employee United Way Campaign with an emphasis on community health services that are funded by the United Way.

“I encourage everyone to visit the fair to learn about the newest and latest wellness initiatives and trends.  By making simple adjustments in our lives – eating better, exercising and getting more rest – we can become a healthier community,” said Mayor Gimenez.  “I also want to thank all of our event partners and sponsors for their generous support.”

“United Way is a proud partner of Miami-Dade County, and keeping our residents healthy is a top priority for all of us,” said Harve Mogul, President and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade.  “Every year with the help of thousands of county employees, United Way continues to invest in quality programs focused on improving education, financial stability and health in our community.”

During the event, participants will enjoy music, food and a number of interactive activities from the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department; Miami-Dade Public Library System; Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreations and Open Spaces Department; and Miami HEAT.  The Wellness Fair will also host a local farmers market, two live transmissions from local radio stations Power 96 and Radio Disney, food trucks, free on-site health screenings, exercise demonstrations and more.  Selected vendors will accept cash, credit cards, debit cards and EBT.

The Fall into Wellness Fair is the second of a series of events that are a part of the Worksite Wellness initiative led by the Office of the Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.  This event is sponsored by the United Way of Miami-Dade, Employee Discount Program sponsors, Samsung and T-Mobile.  The in-kind contribution and participation of County Departments, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Miami-Dade County Health Department, the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, The Miami-Dade County Employee Wellness Center and local businesses also make the event possible.
