Miami-Dade County to host Spring Wellness Megafair on Thursday, May 15, 2014

(MIAMI, May 12, 2014) – Miami-Dade County is hosting its first 2014 Wellness Fair on Thursday, May 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, located at 111 NW 1 Street, in Downtown Miami. Employees, residents and visitors will have an opportunity to network and participate in fun, engaging activities coordinated by County departments, nonprofit organizations and merchants who will showcase their products and educational material to promote healthy lifestyles.

This event is part of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez’s Worksite Wellness Initiative to encourage a healthy lifestyle for employees. Each department will be represented by “Worksite Wellness Coordinators” who regularly volunteer to disseminate information to employees and coordinate initiatives to promote eating healthy, staying active and living well. The Fair will also emphasize family-oriented activities in observance of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ “Take Your Child to Work Day”. Mayor Gimenez will tour premises and continue his long standing tradition of taking pictures with kids and their parents.

“I encourage everyone to visit the fair to learn about the newest and latest wellness initiatives and trends.  By making simple adjustments in our lives – eating better, exercising and getting more rest – we can become a healthier community,” said Mayor Gimenez.  “I also want to thank all of our event volunteers and sponsors for their generous contributions.”

During the event participants will enjoy music, food and a number of interactive activities from the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department; Miami-Dade Public Library System; Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreations and Open Spaces Department; and Public Safety Demonstrations, amongst others. The Fair will host a local farmers market, live DJ’s performance from local party radio station Power 96, food trucks, free on-site health screenings, exercise demonstrations and much more. Selected vendors will accept payments in cash while others will accept credit or debit cards and EBT.

The Spring into Wellness Fair is the first of a bi-annual event that is part of the Worksite Wellness Program led by the Office of Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. This event is made possible thanks to in-kind contributions from several County Departments and the sponsorship of the Miami-Dade County Employee Wellness Center and its instructors, the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, Dade County Federal Credit Union, Party2Much Rental and participating merchants of the Employee Discount Program.
