More than 100 companies participated in the Expo, which not only featured job openings but resources such as free and low-cost training opportunities. Thanks to $21 million in federal economic stimulus dollars the County’s workforce development agency, South Florida Workforce, is offering assistance with training programs and re-directing workers in fields like healthcare and IT where local employers are hiring. Josephine - MetroZoo's gorilla

Thought this was really interesting and wanted to share. Above is a an exclusive picture of a rare cataract surgery on a gorilla at MetroZoo that took place this past Friday. Josephine, a 42 year old 160-pound gorilla, is a resident at Miami MetroZoo was in perfect shape except one thing, she was quickly going blind. Doctors at the zoo located two thick bilateral cataracts in Josephine's eyes, just like humans get. So her doctors decided to fix them, just like humans do. This particular procedure is a rarely preformed and has only been done in two other zoos in the U.S. Since it was a delicate surgery and the need for limited activity and people in the operating room, Miami-Dade TV cameras captured the event for all news outlets both local and national.

    Happy Birthday MIA

Miami International Airport (MIA) recently celebrated its 81st birthday. On September 15, 1928 one of Pan Am's two Sikorsky S-38 amphibian aircraft took off from a dirt runway at Pam American Field, etched out of 116 acres of bush and palm trees. With its eight-passenger quota and 340 pounds of mail, air time to New York was about 16 hours. The 90-by-100-foot hangar, its workshop and the first Pan Am offices required an investment of nearly $500,000. Floodlights were installed for night landings. This was the first scheduled flight from what is now Miami International Airport.

    Miami-Dade County Budget FY 09/10

On September 18, 2009, Miami-Dade County government passed a budget that does not raise the property tax rate and protects many of the programs and services that our residents demand and depend upon. At the same time, there are surgical cuts across our organization and we continue to streamline the workforce. We are also continuing to make strategic investments in projects that keep us on the map as a world class destination.

Eight years since one of the most defining tragedies in our nation's history

It’s hard to believe it has been seven years since one of the most defining tragedies in our nation's history. Our nation and our way of life have changed drastically since then. Each of us remembers what we were doing and where we were at this time, on this day, eight years ago. On September 11th, 2001, our generation was reminded that the values of life and liberty cannot be taken for granted.

Looking back, it seems like just yesterday we all witnessed an unspeakable act of terror. Yet in the face of terror, we saw incredible acts of compassion, bravery and sacrifice, particularly our public safety professionals. That is why September 11th will always be a day of significant importance to our fire and police brotherhood.

We remember the selfless devotion of the courageous men and women who came to aid of their fellow man. We remember their ultimate sacrifice to defend and protect our nation from those who seek to destroy it. We also remember those whose tomorrows were stolen from them and families torn apart. Eight years later, our thoughts and prayers are with those who must face each day without a husband, wife or child.
Together, on this somber day, we think back with sadness, we draw strength from each other and, we look ahead with hope.
